Socialization Is
Good, Says Mayor
Carson Tells Kiwanis He
Favors Trend if "it
Comes Naturally
- Mayor t Joseph K. Canon, Jr.,
Of Portland yesterday denounced
a socialization "which makes
men and women spend all their
time wondering what , the social
system Is," and declared that he
was behind a "natural" socializa
tion which tends toward greater
pleasure . and happiness for the
bulk of the community. He was
speaking before the local Kiwanis
club in their regular meeting at
the Marion hotel.
"Socialization which comes
nalnrall-r la rood." he declared.
"but that which comes through
political control is wasted
time, and in .the end means the
surrender of democracy and free
government."
The Portland mayor also in
veighed against an economy of
scarcity which involved the cur
tailment of productive power or
of production itself. "It la not
a sound economy," he asserted,
"to keep price levels high, and
to hare to borrow money to take
care of the unfortunate persona
who are unable to meet a forced
price leyeL".
Huge holdings by the torera
ment he said to be a threat to
domestic growers of foodstuffs
and other commodities.
In a passing reference to pub
lie power holdings, particularly
BonneTille, he declared himself
In favor of allowing the people to
hare the power available, which
Is their right, but warned that
they should not be "taken -into
camp and loaded with bonds."
In a final peroration he paid
his respects to the responsibility
of management in modern indus
try. "As long: as we lire as a
people, and grow and prosper, we
cannot turn our backs on these
useful citizens, the managers," he
affirmed.
Mayor Carson was Introduced
by Mayor W. W. Chad wick of
Salem.
Justice Seeking

than be bargained for yesterday
when he complained to the
sheriffs office about thefts from

When - officers arrived they
heard his case,' but they shortly
Identified Waymire himself as an
Individual for whom a bench
warrant had been sworn out In

tember 14.
Waymire was taken there and
paid a total of 88, the balance
due on a fine of $100 and costs
Imposed on him' for larceny of
cherries earlier in the summer.
In the interim. $50 ball which he
had posted - on serving notice of
appeal , of the ease . had been
applied on the fine, and the
amount paid today completed ta
transaction. r
For j that reason It was small
comfort to Waymire when ha
learned that the thief. Tommy
