will speak to the convention Sat
urday night, and on Sunday aft

dress and lead the decision serv

Much interest has already been
shown and committees have been
appointed and are functioning to
ward the goal of a great conven
tion. The challenging theme that
came out of the international so
ciety's convention in Cleveland
this July arill be used "Christ
Calls." Young people and adults
alike will be urged to attend and
participate in the . fellowship of
the convention sessions. '
Public meetings will be held
at 7:30 Friday,! 7:45 Saturday
night and at- 2:30 Sunday after
noon. A banquet will be held Sat
urday night at 6:15 p. m. at the
Court street-Church- of Christ.

several large churches in Cali
fornia before taking over his du
ties as president ot San Francis
co Theological! seminary. He is
well known throughout North
America as a fine speaker, church
leader, and challenger of youth.

Ex-Salem Educator Goes
to Eastern Normal
Presidency
Dr. iRoben J. Maaske, an educa
tor stationed in Salem from 1931
to 1936, today will assume the
presidency of Eastern Oregon
college of education at La Grande.
Before coming to 'Salem, Dr.
Maaske served ' school principal
ships at Ewing, Neb., and Irrigori,
Ore., and from 1929 to 1931 was
a supervisor in the Portland pub
lic schools.
He came to Salem in 1931 as
deputy state superintendent of
public: instruction until 193 6.
when he completed study for his
master of arts degree at Univer
sity of Oregon. He studied at the
University of Minnesota in 1936
and 1937 and received his doc
torate there in 1938.
Dr. ; Maaske has served as pro
fessor of school administration at
the University of North Carolina
for the past twO years and also
as editor of The High School

Unless state departments are
prevented from spending all of
their appropriations the state of
Oregon will complete the 1939-40
biennium with a deficit of $683,-
477, David Eccles,- state budget
director, declared here Thursday.
Eccles estimated that he could
save approximately $590,000 dur
ing the remainder of the biennium
by pruning departmental expendi
tures. He said increased revenues
might wipe ut the remainder of
the estimated deficit. ' .
Revenues Of the' biennium were
estimated at $17,000,866, with
$17,169,684 appropriated to oper
ate, the state! government. This
leaves a deficit of $168,818, for
the current biennium. With the
1937-38 deficit added, the deficit
would be Increased to $ff83,4T7
on December 31, 1940.
