Dr.Adolph Weinzirl, city health
officer, and Mayor Joseph K.
Carson were divided today on the
adequacy of the police emerg
ency hospital for care of serious
cases, i j
Dr. Weinzirl said the hospital
was dark 'and poorly ventilated
and proper eare for serious cases
was impossible because the nurse
wag required to administer to
other patients.
Mayor Carson told the city
council he had Been extreme
cases handled efficiently "in the
woods and in a muddy field hos
pital in war time."
the health officer said that
because of the hospital's condi
tion he would not assume respon
sibility for Lester Biggs, 21,
wounded by police.
One major hospital refused
police patients after Allen Brum-,

an attendant In an. unsuccessful
attempt to escape from Good
Samaritan hospital.
The city, however, was relieved
of the two men 1 when 'commit
ment, papers for trial were served
on the sheriff. Indicating both

Big Max Butcher shut out his
former teammates, 1 to 0, with
five hits In the opener to win his
third straight game and his fifth
of the year while Walter Beck
pitched the Phils to 11 to 6 tri
umph in the nightcap for his sec
ond straight and his sixth win of
the campaign.
The Phils pounded out 14 hits
off four enemy pitchers In' the sec
ond game. Bob Klinger started,
but was knocked out before retir
ing a man as the Phils pushed

al tennis championships were drawn today in an atmosphere
of gloom and uncertainty because of the possibility that many
foreign stars will have been called home for war duty before
play begins Sept. 7.
Foreign seeded players included Charles Hare of Eng-

The Community Playhouse met
last night at the Salem Art Cen
ter and set machinery in motion
to create a unified organization
that will be permanent.
The forming of the constitu
tion will be left to the drama
commission.
The General meeting was in
charge of Larry Boulier, director.
Plans for securing memberships
were discussed with need of or
ganizing of various departments
stressed by Mr. Boardmand. The
membership committee will be
headed by James Keys who has
called a meeting of the commit
tee for Tuesday night in room 3M
at the Artr-Center,-Jrhose serving
on the committee are Mrs. Jose
