The first flax festival was held In 1936 as a community harvest celebration, but the affair has in creased in size yearly until it now draws the Interest of a num ber of surrounding counties. Out of the staging of the festival has grown the organization known as the Flaxarians. a linen-clad, uni formed marching group which nnmoers over 80 members. The monks of St. Benedict at MC Angel, hare accepted the urgent appeal of His Excellency , William Mark Duke, D. D. archbishop ot Vancouver, B. C, to open in September his archdiocesan seminary of Christ the King located at Ladner, B. C. This Is the preliminary step to ward the establishment of a new benedictlne monastery. Repeated Invitations have come to the benedictines of Mt Angel from Vancouver diocese as "well as others to establish houses of the order, but circumstances have hitherto made it Impossible to comply. The present archbishop duke began negotiations with Mt. Angel in 1932. Rt. Rev. Thomas Meier, Abbot of St. Benedict's 'abbey here, pointed out that making the new foundation at the present time entails great sacrifices on the part of his comparatively young community. priests to uo. Very Rev. Cryil Lebold, O. S. B. as religious superior, and four other monks of Mt Angel will be sent at once to become professors at the new institution. Abbot Thomas has appointed Rev. Eugene MedVed, O. S. B. as rec tor of the Ladner seminary. The seminary of Christ the King is located at Ladner, B. C, ten miles from Vancouver. The benedictines of Mt. Angel are familiar with the Canadian west coast having built and conducted the Christie residential school for Indian children on Vancouver Is land and administered to out lying missions since 1900. This will be the first daughter house of St. Benedict's abbey which was itself founded In Ore gon In 1882 taking its origin from Engelberg, Switzerland, an abbey having a continuous ex istence of over 900 years. Henry Von Hatten, the ances tor of the clan In this country, came to the United States in 1848. shortly after his marriage to Christina Lang Hoth wilier, in AIsaee-Loraine. They settled first in Pittsburgh, Pa., then moved to Ohio, from thence to Wiscon sin, where Henry Von Hatten died, and then came to Oregon. They had ten children, Mrs. Thersa Kirsch of Mt.
