SYNOPSIS
Katie Tberese Alexander lives
! In Hollywood, at 657 Dover Drive.
That Hollywood address may
; sound exciting but it isn't really,
j Dover Drive is a dusty, hot little
i street, far from the wide boule
vards.. There is a sign in the win
; dow, "Julie's Beauty Shoppe."
Underneath it js another sign,
"Circulating Library." Julie San
! difer-of the old silent film days
is Marie's mother. They live with
i . Julie's third husband, Charlie Bron
: son. Marie hasn't the temperament
for the movies. She takes out her
longing for romance by correspond
i ing with Edward Wilson of Oak
: land, whose letter to a correspond
; ence club she answered. She looks
: forward to a first meeting with Ed
: ward, but fears it too. He arrives
t in Los Angeles without notifying
i her in advance. Marie is so flua
: tered dressing for an appointment
with Edward, the goes 'round in
! circles. Julie suggests that Marie
i bring Edward to dinner, but Marie,
: ashamed of her home, declines. Ed
l ward Is just as Marie bad pictured
! himtall and handsome. They are
i mutually attracted. Edward is fa
miliar with Hollywood's bright
spots having played there in pic
: tores.
CHAPTER V
1 He did all the talking. He was
pleasantly' surprised after the first
: shock, to find that she was. so shy
and unsophisticated. Her letters had
, suggested something quite different,
i She ' just sat there, and looked
adoringly up into his eyes It was a
pose, of course her line, but a darn
good one. His sister Bee could take
- a few pointers, but of course she
wouldn't didnt know enough.
! The few questions she asked were
all about him. 'How long had he
stayed in the lonely Stanislaus for
est? He must have come back to
Oakland right after she wrote that
, first; foolish letter because almost
i directly bis address changed. -
I He tried to answer, told half of
. his best storyabout the time that
he and the ranger from Frawley's
tried to roll a burning log into a
flaming canyon, and the other fel-
low's leg got caught in the branches,
and he, Edward, alone and single

hurt, both terribly, scared and it
did make a good story. . . . But he
interrupted even his best story to
- gaze at her. to tell her she was dif
ferent from. Any girl . he'd ever
known, that her eyes were stars,
her sun a Bower petal, her hair
dark cloud of glory. . . ;
; She meant to notice evenrthinr,
to remember everything they had
to eat, to tell Julie' later. But she
hardly noticed what he ordered, and
when the food came they left it, to
! dance. :.- ;
I He was a born dancer. He danced
easily, gracefully, a living part of
the music. Under his expert guid
ance she forgot to be nervous. They
floated together.. Other couples
crowded them, touched them, on the
crowded floor. But they were alone

The dessert had come, and she
must have eaten it, because ; the
plate was empty. -----.----
K "More coffee,' Edward said, "and

! She loved his man-of-the-world
manner. He knew how to do things.
He sailed right ahead, without look
tag to see how much... -w.
. ; The floor show was on again. She
watched it, smlUnr happily. They
danced again and again. There was
much more room now. People didnt
get in their way aa they did before.
