Library Offers Variety
Of Services to Mother

Children' librarian.
The public library has much to
offer parents of pre-school chil
dren. They need not wait until
I children learn to read before In
troducing them to books. A lore of
books can be instilled at an early
ace.
First of all are the books which
the mother will want in order to
refresh her memory of nursery
rhymes. Later she will want illus
trated editions of these, such as
"The Gay Mother Goose" by Fran
colse., Everyone Is familiar with
the action jingle "This little pic
went to market," but few know
that there are a great many simi
lar games in the book -Finger
plays" by Emllie Poulsson.
Next come the picture books
with bright Illustrations on every
page, accompanied by a simple
story which the parent can read to
the child. For the first books clear
pictures without too much detail
are best Small children prefer
' pictures of familiar things. Aroid
fantastic Illustrations and garish
colors. Even the smallest of chil
dren can be taught to handle
books carefully.
Among the books which are pop
ular at the library are two old fa
vorites "The Tale of Peter Rabbit"
and "Little Black Sambo." A third
Is the story "Epaminondas," which
has Just this year been made avail
able in Illustrated book form.
Among the more recent popular
books are those by Marjorle Flack
about the various adventures of
Angus, a Scottie, and those about
William, a small boy. MaJ. Lind
man, a Swedish author-artist, has
