Huge 'Planet Swept by Storms
As Jupiter, biggest of the sun's family of planets, swings Into position
for its annual opposition, astronomers are training their telescopes
. on the Tast areas of turmoil, in the chill, poisonous atmosphere of
the .earth's larger neighbor. Violent changes are seen as the titan
spins dizzily on its axis. Storms, marked by intricate detail in bands
or belts across the 88,000-mile diameter. These storms extend from
far into the southern hemisphere to an equal distance in the north
era portion. This sketch by Arnold Mountf ort was made at Griffith
observatory, la Los Angeles. I shows the storm bands and also, at
left, is one of Jupiter's moons casting a pin dot shadow on the plan.
