Bootlegging Evil
Argument for publication In
e measures' pamphlet opposing
tl initiative measure - providing
th$ all intoxicating liquors, In
cluding beer, shall be dispensed
in btate liquor stores, was filed In
the 'state department here Tues
day. Particular objection was voiced
to that provision of the initiative
bill which would make it unlaw
ful t to establish a state liquor
store within a half mile of a
school or church. The negative
argument alleged that this provi
sion would wipe out most of the
existing state . liquor stores , and
make it impossible to. establish
new' 'ones...--"- ':.'r'".
' Another provision of the Initia
tive bill making the state liquor
commission responsible for dam
ages -for. tbe sale of liquor to persons-without
a liquor permit or
other Ylolations of law was at
tacked in the argument. It . was
contended that this provision was
unfair and unreasonable and
would weaken the Oregon liquor
setttp. :. . v '.. , ' '
Fear Bootlegging Revival ',
I Charge also was made that
passage of the 'inlatlve measure
would revive bootlegging and re
duce the liquor receipts to such
an extent that there would be no
funds for old age assistance.
The negative argument was
filed by the Law and Temperance
League of Oregon, of which Wal
ter P. Fell, Eugene, is president.
The original Initiative measure
was filed b. tbe .Ant! Liquor

. The time for filing negative
arguments, expires today. .
The measures pamphlet will be
