All Is not well with Charlie Johns. 22-year-old mountain youth of
Tread way. Terav and his child bride, Eunice, whom he married two
years ago when she was only nine.- This union which caused so much
criticism throughout the nation threatens to go on the rocks. They
have been so publicized and pursued by the curious that their exist
ence has been far from normal. Neighbors describe their relation
ship as more that of father and daughter than man and wife, They
live in isolated seclusion in a humble log cabin remote from any

Mueller to Go to
Insurance Session
A. O. Mueller, Salem district
agent of the Lincoln National Life
Insurance Company, leaves next
week to attend the company's re
gional convention at the Hotel
Del Coronado Coronado Beach,
Calif., June 22, 23, and 24.
At the conrention, Mr. Mueller
will be presented a hand engrared
plaque, gold record emblem, and
other awards In recognition of his
outstanding sales work of the past
year. The awards will be present
ed by A. L. Dern, vice-president
and director of agencies of the
Company. Mr. Mueller is one of
more than 200 salesmen who will
attend the company's 1938 re
gional conventions.

said, was struck by lightning before it crashed. The above photograph shows the wreckage. A farm boy
witness reported that the ship exploded, bounced in the air and spewed bits of wreckage over a half
mile area. The bomber was en route to Denver, Colo., from an army field at Rantoul, 111.

prison. The bird was fed, given
water and turned loose.
The Golden Gate club Is send
ing about 300 pigeons here
Thursday, to be released from
the Railway Kxpress office at
12th and Oak streets at 5:30 a.
m. Saturday. The purpose is to
see if any of the birds can make
the 500-mile flight back to Oak
land during daylight. Last year
the weather was bad and a large
number were never seen again.

be presented at the party Friday
night as Miss Model Salem. Her
photograph and description will
then be forwarded to New York
City for entry in a nationwide
competition whose . winner will
receive a course in modeling and
a motion picture contract.

Here Thursday
A mass meeting of Marion
county grocers has been called
Thursday evening, June 16 at 8
o'clock at the Salem chamber of
commerce. The purpose of the
meeting is to receive informa
tion regarding the new anti
price discrimination law andf
what the effect of its enforce
ment will mean to those dealing
in food products, particularly
the grocers.
A committee consisting of
Lloyd Legarie, chairman; A. A.
Krueger, L. R. Sanetell, W. R.
Walker and N. G. Isaak has been
appointed to bring in a report
on organization.
E. D. Suitor, of Portland," ex
ecutive secretary of the Oregon
Wholesale Grocers' association,
and Carl T. Pope, Salem attor
ney, will deliver short talks on
the new anti-price discrimination
law. The committee is urging
all grocerymen in Marion county
to attend this meeting. More
than 100 grocers are expected to
attend.

Remind Students

Those Taking Temporary
or Permanent Summer
Jobs Must File
Students who will enter com
mercial and industrial employ
ment this summer were reminded
by the social security board yes
terday that they will need social
security account numbers. Before
beginning employment they
should apply for a number at the
Salem office of the board, room
200 postoffice building.
It is estimated by the federal
of lice of education that this sum
mer approximately 1,000,000 stu
dents may begin their business ca
reers, or take a job during vaca
tion. Students, and teachers who
work only during . the summer
also need account numbers.
Whether the employment is
part-time,' temporary, or perma
nent, and although the employer
has no other employe, a report of
the employes wages together with
his account number must be made
to the federal government by the
employer, explained Ben- O. Lip
scomb, manager of the Salem
office. The employe is required to
report his account number to bis
employer. ; . ,
AH wages an employe receives
during his entire life from em
ployment covered under the old
age insurance system. Mr. Lip
scomb explained, will be counted
as credit toward his old-age in
surance. Wages for temporary or
part-time employment, no matter
how small, will increase by that
mucn ine worxer s creaus towara
his old-age benefits. It is there
fore important to the employe
that his wages reported by h s em
ployer be identified by an account
number so that they will bs cor
rectly recorded in his old-age In
surance account,
Grants Pass Man
Held Polygamisl
GRANTS PASS,June 14.-r(yP)-A
circuit court Jury convicted Ed
ward N. Santee, realtor, of
polygamy today.
The state charged Santee mar
ried the late Izina Spencer John
son while he was still married to
Christens M. Santee of Kelso,
Wash. Judge H. D. Norton, re
fused to recognize the defendant's
plea he was divorced in Mexico.
Luvilla S. Santee, a former wife
of the real estate dealer, died two
years ago of a gunshot wound.
Sante was also wounded. A grand
jury said Mrs. Santee met death
at the "hands of persons un
known." V".
Move to Milwaukie
UNIONVALE Mr. and Mrs.
Harold Stoutenburg, who have
resided in the Neal Stoutenburg
cottage for a year, are moving
to Milwaukie where the former
will run a service station for
