Botbered by deer spotlighters.
Frank Royer, Rice Creek farmer,
arose Tuesday night when be
heard shooting In his field. :
Accompanied by his wife, he
started an Investigation. She fell
over a wire stretched across a
roadway and a few minutes later,
Royer was blinded by a spotlight
and felled with a blow In bis face.
Deputy Sheriff Clifford Thorn
ton said today that Royer claimed
tq have recognlxed his assailant
as his father-in-law, John S. Rob
erts, who was arrested on a com
plaint of assault and battery.
Thornton said Roberts admitted
striking Royer.

Destroyed, Blaze
; Fire which broke out shortly
after AItIq Richardson had de
parted on a business trip to Cali
fornia yesterday afternoon de
stroyed his small house at 1231
Ruge Avenue, West Salem.
A Salem lire department
pumper was called to the fire but
the blaze was well advanced when
it arrived. Some of Richardson's
personal possessions were eared.
The house was bellered to be
partially covered by insurance.
A large crowd of West Salem
residents was attracted to the
blaze.
Emmons to Be Chairman
Of Convention Session
C. S. Emmons, who will be a
delegate of the Salem 20-30 club
to the national convention in
Reno September 9 to 12. has been
appointed chairman of the meet
ing of secretaries to be held in
connection with the convention.
The appointment was made by
Henry Buchler, national presi
dent. A number of other local
members are planning to attend.
