Angeles won the opening game
here today, 4 to 3. after Don
Hurst had broken a 2 to 2 tie In
the eighth with a home run over
the right field fence.
The game was played In an al
most constant downpour after the
fifth Inning.
The Angels twice got a one-run
Jump on the Beavers in early in
nings, but Portland tied twice.
Then came Hurst's homer in the
eighth and another run In the
ninth when the visitors filled the
bases on Liska. The Beavers got
one of them back in their half of
the ninth, but with the tying run
on first base and two down. Dutch
Lieber whiffed Pinch Hitter Bur
nett for the final out.

7,610, Portland's lowest since

health club has completed its
project and . the health posters

make the required exhibit at the

The 4-H sewing club held Its
achievement day - Monday - after
noon at the school house .with
several visitors present. The club
had a splendid display of needle
work. Mrs. C. A. Myers, Mrs. D.

son were judges. Frances Horen,

their work at the spring 4-H
show Thursday, Friday and Sat

With the loss of Lee Fallin. the
speedballer, he has one pitcher
left, LeRoy Bright. Bright had a
little experience with the high
school team last year and pitched
for the American Legion junior
team. He'll do for one hurler but
even a high school club can't get
along with just one pitcher.
The Vikings are at last Ret
ting a chance to get in a little
practice. When they were shut
oat by Chemawa last week they
had hardly had any infield
practice because of the sloppy
condition of Olinger field. This
week they don't play until Fri
day when they go to Eugene for
a game with the Axemen.
Vern Gllmore takes his track
team to MHwaukie Thursday and
figures that maybe, after winning
a pair of meets, his hoys will drop
one. Milwaukie, Vern says, has
just about the , best dual meet
team in the state. It's a well-bal
anced outfit that gets points all
along the line and is pretty tough
to beat in dual competition
"They'll probably beat us by
about 30 points," Gllmore said,
"but when the district meet comes
along we'll be ahead of them."
Some of the best water
splashers in-the northwest will
converge on Salem Slay 1 when
the local Y. M. C. A. pool will
be the scene of the Northwest
Y. 9L C A. championship tour

TALBOT, April 20. The re
cent high water did considerable
damage near Talbot. Drift is piled
on fields, orchards and hop yards.
A lot of the. gravel which was
recently put on the road has been
washed away and flax just plant
ed and .young clover fields are
damaged. Traffic was resumed in
the lower region Sunday.

innings, held a 10-2 lead as the
game went into the seventh in
ning. The Beavers hopped on

thing went by sevens as the Sil
verton , high baseball team tied'
the University of Oregon Frosh
here today. The score was 7 to 7
when -the game was called off in
the seventh inning because of
rain and dusk. And Silverton col
lected seven hits.
Both pitchers were wild. High
of Silverton Issuine ten walks and
Robertson of the Frosh six.
West Linn will come here Fri
day for the first league game,
and the Silver Foxes are also
scheduled to play the Oregon State
college. Rooks the same day.

For Best Spellers
SALT CREEK, April 20. The
spelling tryouts at the Lower
Salt Creek school was held Fri
day night with the following
schools taking part: Orchard,
Pioneer,Upper Salt Creek, Lower
Salt Creek and Smith Field. Polk
Station school is in the district
but had no representatives pres
ent. Contestants were: Orchard,
Catharine Fink and Mildred May;
Pioneer, Walter Taylor and Tru
man Robbins; Upper Salt Creek,
Louise Brown and Roberta Nor
ton; Lower Salt Creek,' Esther
Schrader-and Paul Buhler.
All spelled 147 words before
any -missed.
Those who won the place to
represent this district at the final
contest in Dallas next Saturday
night were Roberta Norton and
Catharine Fink. Mrs. Anna Dash
ields and Leighton Dashlelds of
the Smith Field- school pro
nounced the words.
