PAGE TEN TKe OREGON STATESMAN, Salem, Oregon, Saturday Morning, April 3, 1937 Tuberculosis Test Work Is Outlined Situation in County Told at Lions Meeting by County Leader Why tolerate the continuing ravages of tuberculosis when all eases of the disease could easily be dlscoTered and in most cases cores effected? This question In effect was put to the Salem Lion club Thursday noon by - Mrs. George R. K. Moorhead. execu- tiTe secretary or the Marion coun ty Public Health association in an address on "Tuberculosis in Sa lem and Marlon County." - "If we' had as many cases of smallpox in Salem as we hare of tuberculosis, eTerybody would be up In arms," Mrs. -Moorhead de clared. "Since we know bow to stamp out tuberculosis and have the means to do it, we are Tery negligent in not doing so." Throughout the United States, the speaker pointed out,. 2V times as .many people die from tuberculosis as from automobile accident injuries, or about 89.000 a year. And the tuberculosis yIc tims, she said, are usually "young people, in the prime of life." Seals Pay for Tests Expanding Us program, the county public health association has made It possible through Christmas seal sales this year to offer every school child In the county an opportunity to submit to the simple tuberculin test which proves conclusively .wheth er the person tested has ever been exposed and infected in any de gree with tuberculosis. More than 3000 such tests have been admin istered in the county's schools since January 1. Positive reactions, evidencing possibility that the child may have an active case of tuberculo sis are found In 7.2 pet. of the 171 Salem school children test ed since January 1, Mrs. Moor head told the club men. The 7.2 per cent represented 120 families. These positive reactors are being given further examinations under the fluoroscope to ascertain whether or not they have active cases of the disease. The average of positive-reacting students in Salem high school was found to be 11.5 per cent among boys and 9 per cent ajnong girls, in the junior high schools, 12.7 per cent and In the grade schools 3.3 per cent. Highest In County Health authorities have not yet been able to account for the fact that in schools outside of Salem in this county 9 per cent of ihe grade children reacted positively to the tuberculin test. In the out side high Bchools the percentages were 10 per cent for boys and 9 per cent for girls. Treatment of active tubercular cases will be made possible in more cases in the near future with the completion of a new 50 bed unit at the state tuberculosis hospital. If the Multnomah coun ty tuberculosis hospital author ized by the recent legislative ses sion Is constructed, waiting lists for they state sanitariums will be virtually wiped out, Mrs. Moor head said. The speaker stressed the fact that any person desiring to under go the tuberculin test may apply at any of the schools where clin ics are being held or at the coun ty health offices In the Masonic building between 8:30 and 10 a. m. any Saturday. - Social Hour Club Hears Mrs, Stacey KINGWOOD, April 2 Mrs. C.
