Northwestern dried prune pack
ers are working near top pare in
order to fill orders booked dnrine
the waterfront strike. Sorae; of
the orders are of three months
standing, bavins been specified
that shipments were to be .made
Tla water. New interest has de
Tloped since the eHeme? of
the strike, and recent inquiries
hare resulted in additional ale.
There has been some disappoint
ment In that foreign markets are
not showing the interest anticipat
ed as soon as shioDing was re
sumed. Some packers are of the
opinion, however, that thU outlet
will be forthcoming within the
near future. Government orders
recently purchased for relief pur
poses are filled, permitting the
present, packs to be used in filling
commercial orders.
Prices Unchanged
Prices daring the past week
have made no change, but pack
ers report a stronger tone to the
market and. with other commodi
ties advancing in price, anticipate
larger returns for dried prnnes.
Present quotations, packed In
25-pound boxes. F. O. B. Portland
docks, are as follows: 30-40 6li
c; 40-BOs 4-4c: 50-60s 4
44c; 0-70s 4c; 70-80s 3-3 e.
Prnnes packed in sacks are gener
ally quoted 4e per pound less.
Growers having unsold prunes
report little inquiry at the pres
ent time. The few sales made by
them to packers were around the
following prices: 45-50s 3c: BO
SS. 24c: and 5560s 2c per
pound, f.o.b. loading stations.
Shipments of dried prnnes dur
ing the month of January totaled
728 carloads, originating as fol
lows: California 682. Oregon 39,
and Washington 7.
Shipping Hay to
Drouth Country
Shipments of hay from the Wil
lamette Tslley for drouth areas in
the midwest got under way here
this week, with Claude McKinney
shipping out two carloads early
in the week. Yesterday he had six
cars on the track here, with four
trucks operating to fill them as
rapidly as possible.
The drouth shipments offer
-ash deal to hay owners and Mc
Kinney estimates that a large ton
nage will leate the valley. Cars
on the track now run 20 tons each.
. Hay being loaded yesterday in
cluded aome of the finest cloTer
grown in the Talley. All hay tear
ing on this deal bears the federal
and state inspection certificates,
McKinney stated.
