35, who died at the home of his

11, 1852 and was married there
to Anna Margaret Brand la 1877.
They came to the United i States
In 1882 and settled In Beard sley,
Minn. In September ISIS they
moved to Mt. Angel, whero they
llred rer since.
His first wife, the mother of
his six children, died October IS,
1916. and his oldest son, Herman
jr., died In 1917. Those surrlTlng
are his widow, Mrs. Elizabeth
Keller-Annen; fire children. Sis
ter M. Ida. teacher at Mt. Angel
Normal school. Mrs. Mary Kath
man of Salem. Henry and William
Annen and Mrs. Margaret Staf
fer all of Mt. Angel; and 17
grandchildren. j

were Sunday guests at the home of
her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred L.
Strout. Mr. Strout, Amity's pio
neer merchant, who has been 111
with a severe cold at his home
for the last two weeks Is reported
better, although unable yet to
leave his room.

Against Epidemic
MT. ANGEL, Jan. 21. Every
precaution Is being taken at St.

Community club Monday night
when at least one member of each
family present was called on to
present a number.
Included In the program was
harmonica and piano numbers by
Ed Soberts and Mrs. Clinton Stan
ley; violin selections by Ernest
Algerter and Clarence - Maertz;
skit, Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Vernon
and son Glen; a demonstration of
memory work, Arthur Sandner ;
negro reading, Arthur Walls, and
a song by the two little Ray sis
ters.

Mary'a grammar school to prevent
a flu epidemic here. -About 50
children are absent from school
because of Illness. No severe cas
es, however, have been reported
except that of Jeanne Gillette, a
pupil of the fifth grade. '
.Most of the Illness seems to I
center ' in the upper grades, 10
youngsters being absent from the
eighth grade j and nine from the
seventn. Teachers are watcnlng
the youngster closely for signs of I
colds or other symptoms and
sending them home , at the first
signs of Illness. Children and par
ents are being Instructed ' what
precautions to take. .
i The flu has also taken some In-1
roads on the student, bodjles and
faculties of the two higher Insti
