the death of Rev. ' O.. J. Ordal.
pastor of the Belllngham Luth
eran church, who died' suddenly
at the family home Saturday.
Funeral 7 services will be held
Thursday afternoon at 1 o'clock
from the Belllngham church with
interment at Stanwood, Wash.
Rev. Ordal was one - of the
most prominent Lutheran min
isters on the Pacific coast. At
one time he was president of
Pacific Lutheran college at Park
land, Wash. He has been; prom
inent speaaer ana nas appeared
many times en Silverton pro
grams. He appeared In good
health up to a few minutes be
fore his death. On Christmas
day he preached the Christmas
sermon to his congregation.
Survivors include his- widow,
Anna; two-daughters, Marie Or
dal and Dorothy JohnkBn, both
of Belllngham, and three sons,
Joe and Gordon of Belllngham
and Olaf of South Bend.
Architects Seek
Courthouse Task
. The -first of several architects
who are expected to apply for the
work of designing the' new Mar
lon county courthouse yesterday
conferred with members of. the
sub-eomnmtee investigating ar
chitects for the project. F. Marlon
Stokes, Portland, . who designed
the .'Clackamas county building
was in Salem talking with the Com
mitteemen.
Cuyler Van Patten, John Ram
age ' and - Leroy Hewlett, county
commissioner, were appointed as a
committee to investigate architects
and report at a meeting of the
general building committee to be
held January 7.
The architect selected for the
work will prepare preliminary
drafts of, the new building and
complete an application for PWA
funds. Final decision on the con
struction of the building will be
given by the voters of the county at
the next general or special elec
tion.

Trial of Gottfried Paulus be

without a Jury, was postponed
when Roy Beckman, star witness
for the state, did not appear. All
other, state evidence was put on.
Paulus Is charged in a grand jury
indictment with assault with a
dangerous weapon. The case will
be continued at a time agreed upon
by attorneys.
Paulus Is accused of having hit
Esther Silvers in the head with a
shovel during an altercation with
Beckman at the- home of Eugene
Gosser. The woman was injured
when she attempted to step be
tween tbe two men. according to
the state theory of the ease.
Beckman recently pleaded guil
ty to a charge of disorderly con
duct arising out of the same af
fair. His case was continued for
sentence and he was released on
his own recognisance.' Witnesses

Skilled Laborers
Scarce in County
Aside form carpenters, there
are few skilled- laborers without
jobs In Marlon county, Marie Ba
ker, district statistician for the
state ' employment service said
yesterday In discussing the results
of a statistical inventory Just.com;
pleted at the local employment, of
fice. Many of the Jobless carpen
ters, she said, probably would go
to work soon on the new capltol.
Among the 3321 men and wom
en listed as unemployed in this
county, 1715 are classified as re
lief cases. Farmhands and common
laborers predominate In the list
but there are also many truck
drivers, school-teachers, salesper
sons, clerical workers and Joggers
without work. Of the 542 women
In the list, a majority are house
keepers, a few school teachers.

The old age anuity tax which
starts in 1937 calls for contribu
tions of 1 per cent of payroll,
from employers and 1 per cent of,
wages from employes, except for,
those over 66. The tax is to be
paid monthly. No benefits will go
to those' now over 65; and after
January 1, 1942 benefits will go
to persons over 65 only in propor
tion to their contribution to the
fund. The benefits . will range
from $10 a month to $85 a month.'

ered salaried employes under the

Rally New Year's
A special New Tears day Young
People's rally will be held January
1 at Evangelistic Tabernacle,' 13 th
and Ferry streets. The meeting
will comprise a gathering of young
folk from the Assemblies of God
churches In all northern Oregon
and in the Willamette valley and
on the coast as far south as Eu
gene and Newport. The services
will be at 2 in tbe afternoon and
at 7:30 in the evening.
Special speakers will appear for
each service and the young folk
will bring an abundance of spe
cial music The young folk Invite
