born at Monitor, a few miles east
of Silrerton, Norember 25,. 1850.

". Mrs. Brown's parents were Wil
liam French and Delilah Ann
(Clearer) Eastham, pioneers of
1848. They came In the train of
Bclirar Walker and settled on a
homestead near Monitor,' w'aere
Mrs. Brown was reared. ,

Ait young girl, Mrs. Brown and
her sister. Viola, at the outbreak
of the dril war constrncted a
anion flag, the first to be used in
this vicinity. The flag, flying over
the Eastman home, was the cause
of a bitter quarrel between union
sympathizers and those of the
Confederate sympathies.- The ma
jority prored to be union-minded,
however,' and the flag was permit

At 18 Mrs. Brown began teach-
ing and i taught in many - of the
early schools In Marion county.
W. S. Jack of Silrerton, who is
now past 70, Is one of Mrs.
Brown's early pupils. The first
public library In this end of Mar
lon county was established at the
Eastman home at Monltbr, and
some of the early records were tn
Mrs. Brown's possession when she

Edna Eastham and James Mad
ison Brown were married at a
double wedding, the other couple
being Mr. and Mrs. Jake McV
Clalne. associated with the early
financial ihlstory of SilTerton. Mr.
Brown was a son of Mathew and
Luclnda j( Davis) Brown.
' Grandchildren Survive
: Surviving Mr. Brown are four
grandchildren, Delmar Brown of
Portland. 1 Lowell Brown of Sil
rerton, Virginia Brown of Silrer
ton and now a student of the Uni
versity of Oregon, and Marion
Serebrenenkor of San Francico:
three great grandchildren, two
sisters, Mrs. Robert Alexander of
Forest Gf ore, and Mrs. Alfred
Thirsenof Cambridge, Mass., one
prettier. Orange Eastham of Port

Funeral Is Today
MONMOUTH. Nov. 30 Mrs. W.
J. Stockton. 1. died Sunday at
the family home after a brief ill
ness. Julia Raymond was born
December 4. 1874; at Oakland,
Oreg.. where . her father was a
dentist. Most bf her early years
were spent there and at Roseburg,
In 1902 the family moved to Sa
lem and established their nome.
An uncle, Perry Raymond, was
bailiff of the supreme court of
Oregon for many years.: ' j
"She wa"narrled July 9, 1908,
to William J. Stockholm at Cleve
land. Ohio. Mrs. Stockholm - was
actire In work of the Epworth
Memorial church of Cleveland,
where the Epworth League was
first organized. They returned to
Oregon -lln - 1911 f and . mored
to Monmouth which has been their
. home since. She was actire in
grange work and Is a past noble
grand of the Rebekah lodge. She
also was a member of Adah chap
ter, order of Eastern Star, and a
member bf the Spanish War Vet
erans auxiliary at Albany. She
served innumerable times as
chairman of the heme economics
club, a grange auxiliary which
he helped organise, locally.
Surviving are Mr. Stockholm
and two, sisters, Mrs. Margaret
Carter, Portland; Mrs. Elizabeth
Brune, Jennings Lodge; two oro-
thers, Arthur Raymond. ' Salem,
and Samuel K.. Raymond, Butte,
Moat.' Funeral services - will be
held Tuesday at 1:30 p. m. in the
Monmouth Christian-church.;. di
rected by W. L. Smith funeral
