Copper Price For Export
Up, Telephone Firm's
Earnings Increase
NEW YORK, Oct. 15-jp)-Bns
picked their stocks carefully to
day, concentrating on coppers,
farm implements and industrial
specialties in the business news..
The general list suffered from
neglect and waa inclined to droop.
Losses for the most part were
small and the market held close
to the peak touched a few days
ago. The Associated Press average
of 60 stocks finished .2 lower at
70.9. Transactions totalled 1,785,
410 shares agains 1.642,490 in
the preceding session.
Leading rails backed away with
the headlinfirs among the indust
rials. In some quarters it was
pointed out freight traffic prob
ably was near the seasonal apex
and that autumn stimulus also
might wane in other sectors of the
business front. . .
The day's news, however, in
cluded a rise in the price of cop
per for export to 10 cents a
pound, the highest in five years,
and the third quarter earnings
report of American Telephone &
Telegraph, showing the dividend
earned for the first time since
the comparable 1931 quarter. Pro
fit for the period' was equal to
12.31 a share against $1.75 in the
corresponding months last year.
Weekly federal reserve figures
recorded a $22,000,000 drop in
brokers loans, despite the recent
board; advance in stocks.
Leading speculative commodit
ies were lower. Wheat at Chicago
fell to cents a bushel. Corn
was unchanged to lower. Cot
ton dropped 15 cents to $1.10 a
bale. Foreign exchanges remain
ed in a relatively narrow range.

Causes Halt in Buying For

Wheat Is Down
CHICAGO. Oct, lS.-(JP)-In&l-
cated break-op of tne drougnr.
that has long been severely handi
capping crop prospects In Aus
tralia tumbled wheat prices down
1 cents a bushel today.
Official forecasts were that
much-needed general rains would
be received throughout Australia
within 48 hours. Furthermore,
rains were reported orer eastern
sections of the commonwealth,
giving relief to crops and avert
ing an extension of damage.
With Improvement of prospects
for southern hemisphere crops,
Australian in particular, a pause
in export purchases of Canadian
wheat formed an outstanding fea
ture, the total today being esti
mated at only 400,000 bushels.
Another disturbing Influence was
that for the first time this month.
Canada's rural marketings of
wheat yesterday exceeded 1,000,
000 bushels.

changed to 5 cents higher.
Chicago July wheat contracts
were weakest today, and fell to

Corn, oats and rye largely fol-

fected by favorable weather in

Gardeners and
Ranchers' Mart
PORTLAND, Ore., Oct. 15.-cP)
-Yesterday's reports from the
gardeners' and ranchers market
showed the market as a whole
dull.
Demand remained dull - for
cauliflower, and the market, yes

played weakness. - Carlot sales
were for around 60c and 60c per
crate. Twelve cars were .loaded
Tuesday.
In the east, the potato market
was weak with slow demand, al
though prices here rose a little,
supplies being light. Yesterday
found the prevailing figure to be

and applea were in good demand,
lettuce prices fell somewhat, and
onions remained dull.

lemons and grapefruit were
steady, but oranges were weaker.
Celery held steady, and sweet
potatoes were stronger in line
with advancing prices at Califor
