Oregon-Developed

Kul tor-King, Being Built
i in Portland 'Plantj Is ;
to Be Displayed
; An advanced new garden trac
tor, developed on an Oregon farm,
ia making its appearance on truck
gardens throughout the Pacific
northwest, reports Nelson Bros.,
Salem dealer. " ;
: Named the Kultor-King, It is
enjoying an enthusiastic recep
tion from farm residents In this
region. ., ,.. . " -
It is being manufactured by
Kultor-King. Inc., in its plant la
Portland. President of the com
pany is G. Spencer Hinsdale,
prominent business man. ;
. The forerunner of the-present
Kultor-King was built five years
ago by James Gourley on a tea-
acre truck garden he was farm
ing near Myrtle Creek, Oregon. It
was a crude affair, consisting of
a gasoline motor, automobile
transmission, automobile differen
tial, a clutch, and two wheels -all
mounted on a couple of two-by-fours.
; J
But, wita all its crudeness, tha
machine outperformed any other
garden tractor Mr. Gourley had
ever seen! There are several real
sons for this. One is that auto
mobile differentials are of the
positive type, and permit easy
turning of the tractor from any
position. Another is that automo
bile transmissions are built for
many times "the power generated
by the garden tractor motor, and
therefore there is a Wide margin
of safety And, use or automobile
transmissions gives Kultor-Kings
three speeds ahead and one in
reverse, compared with the usual
one speed ahead and no reverse In
most garden tractors. -A chain
drive is used,, instead of the con
ventional troublesome belt driver.
: Develops. Own Clutch j
Mr. Gourley developed his owu
clutch, of the single dry plate
type. The clutch housing serves
as a belt pulley. Connected by
pulley, j the tractor will operate
washing machines, feed grinders, I
corn shellers, milking machines,
hay choppers, spray plants, ice
cream ; freezers, . concrete mixers.
saws, latnes, water pumps1, light
plants and other - devices.
5 The tractor pulls regular horse
drawn implements. It will plow
a ten-Inch furrow, eight inches
deep, in unbroken- ground as well
