festival sponsored by the state of Pennsylvania at BuckneU univer
sity at Lewis burg call attention to the interest aroused In the cul
tural beginnings of our country. This year more than a score of
festivals reviving the songs, dances and verse of American pioneers
nave been presented. America appears to be "coming of age",

This burning brought out many
people who thought there was a
big brush fire, because of th
dense cmoke that came from th4

Girls Are Feted
MT.' ANGEL, Aug-19. An Im
portant forerunner of -the flax
festival to be held here September
4 and 5 is the candidate's ball
which ' will be given at the Mt.
Angel auditorium on Thursday
night. August 20. in honor, of
the ten highest scoring girls in
the queen contest.
Fifteen of the 25 names now
entered in the race for the Ore
gon Flax Festival queen will be
eliminated by the "ntest commit
tee Wednesday night after the
final count of votes. leaving the
ten highest' to run to the finish.
These ten young Indies will be
the guests of honor at the ball
and at 10 o'clock will be formally
presented to the assembly by
Jacob Berchtold, mayor of Mt.
Angel. The ball is being sponsored
by the Mt. Angel Business Men's
club, with T. B. Endres in charge
of arrangements.
