Robert Karl Jones, ex-conrict.
was sentenced to a maximum of
three years In the state peniten
tiary after entering a plea of guil
ty to a charge of obtaining money
under false pretenses before
Judge L. IL McMahan yesterday.
Jones stated to the court, r as a
matter of defense, that he had not
taken money from poor people
but had only Issued checks to
chain stores". .
Jones was returned to Salem
yesterday afternoon by Sheriff
A. C Burk and District Attorney
W. H. Trindle. by airplane from
Seattle where he had been arrest
ed on a bad check charge. He is
reported to hare Issued more than
SIS 00 worth of bad checks in the
northwest of which at least 11000
was in Marion county,
Jones was sentenced to three
years In the penitentiary - from
Clackamas county- in 182& after
pleading1 guilty to an involuntary
manslaughter -charge following
the death of his stepmother in a
dynamited house. He stated to
the court, that he had written the
bad paper to obtain money to pay
friends who had contributed to
his defense in that case. He was
originally indicted for murder but
after two trials, pleaded guilty to
the lighter charge. . -
In entering his plea yesterday,
Jones waiVed preliminary hearing
