" Recovery Plan at Mon-
mouth Reception
Bjr BEULAH II. CRAVEN
1M0N1I0UTII, July SO A re
ception arranged by the - local
Tow mend club to welcome Roy
5C Miller, delegate to the Town
send conrentlon at Cleveland, was
held Tuesday night in the Chris
tian church. Thomas II. Gentle
presided. ,
la a brief account of the con
tention, as it impressed him. Mil
ler stated that Oregon. Washing
ton and California delegates were
especially honored, being seated
directly in front of the speakers
platform, .
" "Fully one-half, or more of the
total number of delegates pres
ent.' said Miller, "were under 69
Tears, and were just as eager as
the older ones to put the Town
send movement across. . . t
.'"The music particularly de
lighted ije. Because I am inter-,
ested in music I found the tre
mendous chorus, singing old-time
hymns, in the center of that vast
delegation of 20.000. to be highly
inspirational and satisfying. Sen
ator Frank Arbuckle's choice of
songs was 'A Long Long Trail
which was sung often.
f Oration for Towns nd -l'The
' appearance of Doctor
Townsend on the platform
brought forth a tremendous ova
tion. He was calm; serene, with
a tine self-contained dignity. Sen
ator Arbuckie. chosen chairman,
demonstrated his remarkable abil
ity to handle men and affairs. Wil
lis Uahoney of Oregon was -the
first speaker on the platform. He
made s splendid talk. I believe
Mshoney is a man we can all bank
on.

. J "The climax Thursday of tUe
convention, was reached by Fath
er Conghiin. The convention was
not split wide open as certain
press reports i stated. Father
Coughlin. leader of the new un
ionist . party. , Doctor . Townsend
and Gerald Smith, leader of the
Huey Long group, 'ascended the
platform together. 1 It' was 'the
most dramatic scene I ever,, wit
nessed. .:.
- "W. II. Jackson, a southern negro-speaker,
in his talk drew
whites and blacks -together, wip
ing. oat race hatred as I never ex
pected It to be demonstrated, for
I am, myself, a southerner.
Coagtilla is Tolerant
"Father Coughlin accomplished
the same splendid tolerance for
all religions in his address.
"There was ; no profanity . of
speech, and no blurring from to
bacco smoke. : In all that huge
delegation only one spiral of to
bacco smoke arose that from a
young woman reporter, and her
cigarette . . was : promptly extln
guiahed. I
"The. Townsend plan is of so
much greater proportions than I
had ever dreamed, until I wit
nessed that convention. - It's a
great thing, a mighty thing. Noth
ing is going to stop it.- I am con
vinced that many: of Its hardest
workers do not receive adequate
pay for their services. ; Every in
dividual effort is needed to secure
its legislative enactment.
Jay F. Powell pleased with a
solo, accompanied at piano by his
son. Morris PowelL Arthur Moore,
regional organiser. Introduced J.
H.-Weir. a member of the Nation
al Townsend organization, who
delivered the-! address of the
evening. A forceful, dynamic
speaker, zealous in the-Townsend
eause. Weir gave his audience a
wide perspective of the Townsend
scene. . i
A native of Monmouth. Illinois,
Weir has traveled extensively. "I
like Oregon. ' I find it to be a gen
uine 100 per cent American state.
The tremendoca influx of foreign
ers In certain eastern states, who
cannot speak or understand Eng
lish, renders difficulty f or av lec
turer, he said.
Would Investigate Committee -i
- Speaking of the Bell investiga
tion committee. Weir said: "The
Townsend plan has been criti
ciiedV"": Some'of its leaderr hare
been maligned. But the Town
send plan Itself has never been
investigated. The time will come
when that so-called Investigating
committee will be investigated by
the Townsend organization. That
investigation committee - la the
greatest Joke in the century. . If
Will Rogers were alive he would
have made half a million dollars
from Jokes about that committee.
"The Townsend plan is not,
primarily, a pension plan. It la a
recovery plan, a re-building plan.
It reaches out to touch everyone
in every walk of life. The phrase:
For those SO years or older. Is a
misnomer. If Christ had made
religion for only those of 60 years
or older, many woald have felt
excluded from Christianity. Quite
naturally. The Townsend plan la
designed - to - benefit everyone of
every age. Not one economist who
has spoken on our plan has proved
one valid argument against that
plan. -.- . -v - - ' :
"Landon has said he is against
the Townsend plan. - Roosevelt Is
smart enough to k'eep Tats mouth
shut. These . enormous national
debts can be settled only by re
pudiation, by Inflation, or by In
creased mass-purchasing power.
This colossal spending cannot con
tinue. - - - ' " ,
Money Must Circulate
"Prosperity will never, return
to America until mass-purchasing
power is provided to the consum
ers of our produce. I'd like. Just
once, to see America suffering;
from over-production. The Town
send Plan does not propose to give
anyone 1200 a month. We pro
pose to put $200 4 month in the
hands of each old person and say.
This is your responsibility. Cir
culate this money, put it into mo
tion, and it will be against the law
to hare any. of It left in roar bob-
session at the end of SO daya.'
rne Townsend plan is not a
party. Question, but a legislative
enactment that will give America
Dacn- to our people as the Fathers
or America intended It to be."
