WASHINGTON, July iO.-aV
The forest serrice announced to
day that Secretary Wallace had
designated as the Olympic primi
tive area 238,930 acres of na
tional forest land on the Olympic
peninsula In the state of Wash
ington. The new area, an extension of
the present Mt. Olympus national
monument, will be set aside as a
perpetual wilderness reservation.
The forest service said this ac
tion was a major, step toward
adequately safeguarding .recrea
tional values of the region and
preserving outstanding areas of
virgin timber without crippling
the economic life of the Olympic
peninsula, which K is dependent
upon timber resources.
Together with the Mt. Olympus
national monument, recreation re
serves In the Olympic mountains
will total some (CO, 000 acres, an
area approximately that ot the
state of Rhode Island. .
Board to Inspect
Mount Hood Loop
Today the state highway com
mission will inspect the ML Hood
loop road, taking lunch with the
Hood River chamber of commerce.
Tuesday night the commission
will hold a hearing in Salem on
the matter ot the Salem-Dayton
road. I .
Wednesday the commission will''
Inspect the two Santlam highways
and the connecting road to Belk
nap Springs.
Thursday's session will be In
Portland where bids for $500,000
worth ot work will be received.
