REGATTA COURSE, Pough
keepsie. N. Y June 22.-(,)-The
Washington .varsity c r -completed
the first clean sweep made
in the Intercollegiate regatta on
the Hudson river since 1912 to
night when it swept to a length
and a halt victory over California.
Navy took third, Columbia was
fourth, Cornt.ll fifth, Pennsyl
vania sixth and Syracuse trailed
in the main event of the regatta.
Margin is 3.8 Seconds j
The official margin separating
the two western crews was three
and four-fifths seconds. Wash
ington was clocked in 19 minutes
9 35 seconds, California in
19:15 25. Due mainly to the slow
early pace, the time , was consid
erably off the record of 18:f35
45, set by California's 19 38
champions under conditions tqM
were scarcely any more favorable
than today's.
The Washington oarsmen
opened the competition by regis
tering a length victory, over Cali
fornia in the freshman race and
the Huskies Junior varsity crew
paddled down a three-mile course
to defeat the Navy's jayvees by
almost three lengths.
Not since 1912, when Cornell
registered three - victories in a
regatta that had junior varsity
four-oared shells racing Instead
of eights, has a college made a
clean sweep.
The Washington varsity trailed
most of the way during the four
mile racer which saw California
and Navy battling for the" lead
during most of the middle stages.
The Huskies did not make their
bid until they paddled into the
last half mile where they un
' corked a magnificent drive.
-The Huskies' winning time was
slow in being posted. The mid
shipmen's plebes trailed the Cali
fornia youngsters by two and a
half lengths as they finished in
third place in the two-mile open
ing race, with Cornell fourth,
Syracuse fifth and Columbia sixth
aad last. t

THE dark cloud of America's
early Davis Cup defeat by the
Australian team had its silver
lining the brilliant play of Donald
Budge being the one bright shaft
of sunlight breaking through the
gloomy tennis skies.
Budge, a tall, slim kid with a
mop of flaming red hair waving in
the breeze, almost won the Austra
lian series single handed, taking
both of his singles matches, and
losing in the doubles only because
the Anzac tiuo concentrated on his
partner, the erratic Gene Mako.
The torch-topped tennis tornado
from Sunny California is on the
warpath now, out to avenge Amer
ica's Davis Cup elimination by cap
turing the Wimbledon diadem from
the present world's champion, Fred
Perry.
Budge's record is little short of
phenomenal for a comparative new
comer to the top ranks of tennis,
and if his flashing racquet carries
him to the highest pinnacle of the
courts this summer, it will only be
in keeping with his meteoric rise
to stardom.
Already hailed as a "second Til
den," Devastating Don has trounced
all the leading stars of Europe and
America with the one exception of
Fred Perry. Last year the new
California Comet repeatedly
thrashed the great Baron von
Cramm, recent conqueror of Perry
and hailed by many as the world's
best player.
Don's recent smashing victories
over Jack Crawford and Adrian
Quist, the Anzae aces who rank just
in back of Perry and von Cramm,
seem to indicate that Uncle Sam's
new net pet is due for his greatest
season.

Saleni Sunday
- WOODBURN, June 22. Wood
bum's Junior Legion baseball
team won its fourth county cham
pionship In Jive years when it
defeated Salem 13 to 12 in a
hectic contest here Sunday.
Both teams used two pitchers
in a game that saw IS. hits and
12 errors. Eland started for Sa
lem but was replaced by Bright
in the third after Woodburn had
put across eight runs in the first
two innings. When Salem got go
ing and tied the score at 8 to 8
with a five run rally in the fifth
the Woodburn starting pitcher,
Whitman, also took the axe and
gave way to Knight.
It was a disheartening game
for Saleni which fought an up
hill battle to twice overtake
Woodburn only to lose out in the
eighth inning when C. Reed was
safe on Steiger's boot and went
on around for the winning run.
Woodburn, which will be host
to the state tournament again
this year, has won a state cham
pionship and a northwest title
in previous years. To enter the
state tournament Woodburn must
