stock marketwicd a feeble line
buck today, but was thrown for a
small loss. -
Gains of fractions to 2 or more
points were scored in the morn
ing. Then the going became a
little rougher and the afternoon
performance was a slip-shod af
fair at the best. , In the final hour
most advances were cancelled or
replaced with fractional declines.
It was a dragged session
throughout. : Total transfers of
599,020 shares were the smallest
for a 5-hour day since June 7,
last year. They compared with
677,750 Monday. The Associated
Press average of (0 issues yield
ed .1 of a point at 5-8.5.
Changes Varying i
Of the 20 most active stocks of
the day; 9 were moderately un
der water at' the close, 7 w e r e
higher and 4 were without change.
Among the latter were General
Motors at 634 and New York
Central at 32.
Shares that managed to emerge
with net advances of fractions to
2 points or so included American
Can at 129, U. S. Steel at 554
and Standard Oil of New Jersey
at 59.': ; !
On the losing side for as much
were Bethlehem, at ,4"8I4, 4:1.
Case at 146, Standard Oil of Cal
ifornia at 38, General Electric at
35 and Anaconda at 32. A
loss of 14 points was shown on
a 200-shart transfer of Otis
Steel Preferred at 73.

per had charge of the decorations.

increase of probable yield.
It was largely on this
basis
that the market at first made only
a feeble transient upturn of
prices, and later dropped to the
lowest level since the first! week
of September. 1935.

strawberries, recent deals are de
clared to have brought the nickel
figure on two lots totalling 300
tons of Marshalls. It Is estim
ated 1000 tons of Marshalls were
sold several months ago at 5
cents, and that there is another
1000 tons or more unsold but
which will probably go at the
same figure.

ing up the year's class work.
School will close May 29, with
graduation exercises at the com
munity hall. May 22, for the
eighth grade. A class of 13 will
graduate this year.
