of the commission are democrats
and are known to have regarded
Bassett highly. William II. Goss
Ain, personal secretary of Gover-
' nor Martin, has long been a friend
of Bassett and has been active
with him in affairs of the Toung
1 democratic organization.

available in the supreme court
building, it was learned yester-
. day. State officials said there was
no need for the commission to
locate in Portland. The offices
formerly used by Rufus C. Hol
man. state treasurer, are available

to work on the new county blan

week, S. W. Richardson, project
supervisor, announced late eter

120 men to work on the new road

The new project, offering em
ployment possibilities near Salem
where the relief load is heaviest,
will result eventually in many
men being transferred from old
distant projects to road work near

A tabulation of timekeepers
Wednesday night showed 1214
men and women at work in WPA
projects in this county. In addi
tion there were 12 assumed to be
working most of the time but ab
sent the day the checkup was
made. One hundred thirty-eight of
the total were women.
A similar study of .Polk WPA
records showed 111 men and no
women at work on projects.

tors and brewers. Of the 250,000
bale estimated production for the
Pacific coast In 1935, approxi
mately 185,000 bales were picked,
reports indicate. Although ad
verse weather conditions reduced
the estimated production by 65,
000 bales, It is believed that 30,
000 bales of the 1935 picked crop
will be carried into the surplus,
because of lack of demand.
Means 3 Millions
If Program Succeeds
"The average sale price for the
last hop crop in Oregon was ap
proximately 11 cents," one ot the
committee members reported. "If
this price, through the control of
tonnage, is maintained at 25 cents
a pound, the result would be in
creased revenue of approximately
$3,000,000 for the growers in this
state.
"The money, which Is paid to
Oregon hop growers each year, is
out-of-state money, and "would not
be brought into the state other
wise. This Is being done without
tapping our natural resources in
any way. Many of our natural re
sources are being badly depleted
yearly.
"Regardless of 'the downward
trend of prices and increasing
costs pf hop production, the gov
ernment has not aided the grow
ers as other branches of the AAA
have been aided because there has
been no strong coastwise organ
ization. In the future the hop
grower will need protection and
representation because of; severe
restriction and regulation, and
this can be accomplished only by
organization."
According to the complete plan
for the organization, associations
similar to the Orfegon faction will
organize in California and Wash
ington. These three etouds will h
correlated by a master corpora
tion. Known as the National Hop
Growers, Inc., and will be made
up of representatives from the
three state groups.

mittee, who have worked out the
proposed plan, together with rep
resentatives from the other two
states, are Dean Walker, Inde
pendence, chairman: F. E. Need-
ham, Salem, secretary; Ray Glatt,
wood burn: Joe Keber, Mt. Angel;
W. S. Walton. A. M. Jerman and
C W. Paulus, all of Salem.

lic will not have to pay as much
for jhis Christmas turkey as he
did for his Thanksgiving one, but
just how much off that price will
be local dealers will make no
guess. In fact, they admit they
axe just as anxious to know as is
the man who has to pay for the

Although shipments for the
eastern market are past, local
buyers were still quoting about
the same market figures yester
day,! except for a one-cent drop in
prices to growers on fancy young

cafe. A total of 60 members were
present. L. Mickelson presided at
the meeting.
Don Upjohn was principal
speaker. He told of the benefit
that the patriotic societies ren
dered to society. These benefits
may not be apparent at the pres
ent time but will be appreciated
by c o m 1 n g generations, Upjohn
said.
Mayor V. E. Kuhn and County
Commissioner Leroy Hewlett also
spoke briefly.
