Preceding the pictures Jack Ty son entertained With bis dog. Golden Cocker Spaniel, a young dog who knows 87 words and can perform a number of tricks. Next Friday night the Marion union local will present a Tanderille , stunt preceding the pictures. Sat urday afternoon a boys foot race was featured on Main street with George Grenx winning first prise. A tug-of-war was also a special feature with Clinton Hart and James Pate as captains, Hart's team winning. Mrs. Maude Black well receired the $5 basket of groceries from Knight Bros. - Lease Miller Ranch Mr. and Mrs. D. T. Hen ion and family, who have been living on the John Henderson place north west of town for the past year, hare leased the A. A. Miller ranch one mile southwest of here and have moved there. . It will be the first time the federal government and the city administration has joined in ob servance of the occasion. Three bombing planes of the U. S. army will circle over Perry's monument tt Cleveland's Gordon park where a number of events are planned in homage to Perry, whose dispatch after the victory over the British, was, "We have met the enemy and they are ours. Garage Destroyed by Blaze; Firemen Save Store Nearby SWEGLE, Sept. 9 Fire, which started shortly before noon Fri day, completely destroyed the gar age on the J. C. Whitehead place. which is now being occupied by the J. J. Farrell family. Cause of the fire is not known. Mrs. Farrell was In the store waiting on a customer and did not discover the fire until she re turned to the living quarters in the rear of the store. A fire truck from Salem responded to a call and it was only through quick action of the crew that the store building, which was burning on one corner, was saved. The Far rells lost a quantity of wood, a new tire, some fruit, quite a number of tools and some chil dren's toys which were stored in the garage. Foss, who has been, pastor of Trinity church for the past four years, tendered his resigna tion to jtake place at once. Rev. Foss got a four months' leave of absence early In the summer to serve asf chaplain at Fort Missou la, Mont, where he has been since. Trinity congregation will meet Sundy jnight at 8 o'clock to act upon the resignation and to dis cuss calling someone to fin the vacancy.! Start at Prune Picking Sunnyside Soon SUNNYSIDE, Sept. 9 Things are much astir around Sunnyside getting ready for prune picking which will start this week. Some picking was done last week in the hills. Paul Taylor is having his big turkey' house shingled and fifty acres of the Elderbrook farm sub soiled with the catipillar tractor run by Bus Taylor. Much canning has been done of jams and jel lies. Peaches and Bartlett pears and petite prunes are in popular favor now. Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Rae made an evening call at the Taylor home. Cold refreshments follow ed a merry social hour. Mrs. C. R. Gregg had as house guests last week their two daughters from southern Oregon and California. Silver ton's popular swimming pool will not open again until the regular swimming season is over. George Smith, who has been one of Sil verton's most successful life guards, closed his season Sunday. Houston of Albany Called; Funeral is Today SILVERTON Sept. 9. Mr; and Mrs. F. M. Powell returned from Albany Sunday afternoon where they were called following ' the death of Robert Evens Houston, 80, husband of Mrs. Powell's sis ter, who died suddenly there Frfe day night. A son of the Houstons died June 26. Another son, Evans Houston and his wife and child, had been spending- a vacation with their parents at Albany but had left Friday morning for their home at Los Angeles.
