Ii) BT DEMAND
PORTLAND, Ore., Aug. 20.-)
-The huge spread between extra
butter and standard grade con
tinues in the local trade with lim

biggest call as well as supply is
in standard grade with all scores
inclined to show a strong tone.
During the late session of the
produce exchange a further ad
vance of Vic lb. was forced lor
cubes of the prime first grade
with other scores unchanged.
Butterfat values were inclined
to show a strong tone with for
mer premiums continued general
ly at country points as well as In
some centralized plants.
Market for eggs continued to
show a fully firm tone locally. No
change was shown in prices. While
the trade generally has been talk
ing of a slight Increase In the
supply, local government figures
showed otherwise.
Lambs are Higher
Market was showing a general
rise for country killed lambs, with
sales up to 13c lb. for top qual
ity stuff. There was also a good
demand for yearlings and ewes.
Lightweight veal, country kill
ed, were firm priced in the local
trade with sales up to I3V2C lb.
here. Hogs were Inclined to show
sales resistance since the price
climbed so high.
There was some demand for
country killed goats as a result
of the high cost of other meats.
Young wethers averaging around
30-35 lbs. were selling around a
nickel a pound.
Peach trade was showing an ac
tive tone with prices firm to high
er for Crawfords.
Tomatoes were about steady for
the day although in spots the price
was higher to lower.
Cantaloupes were firmer and
up about a nickel a crate for the
average run.

POWER SHIRES UP
TO BAlii.CE LOSS
NEW YORK. Aug. 20-;P)-The
stock market dug its heels in to
day and managed to halt a slide
which had given some indications
of getting out of control.
A sharp extension of yester
day's reaction was led by the
Utilities at the opening with large
blocks of shares changing hands
at substantial declines. Some
support then arrived for the be
leaguered list and trading volume
dwindled. There was another la
ter sell-off with American Tele
phone breaking nearly 5 points.
But in the final hour the power
company stocks came back briskly
and early declines were either can
celled, reduced or replaced with
moderate advances.
Steady at Close
The Associated Press average
of 60 issues, which was oft .8
of a point at 1 o'clock, ended un
changed at 48. The activity was
not so pronounced toward the
close, although the ticker tape got
behind floor transactions ifl early
selling. Transfers totalled' 1,972,
70 shares.
The wash-out In equities on
Monday and early today was be
lieved by some analysts to have
greatly improved the technical po
sition of the share market. The
comeback of the list was also at
tributed partly to short covering
and rebuying by sold out bulls.
The trade picture was still
bright with summer recessions
holding to less than seasonal pro
portions.

CHICAGO. Aug. 20-)-Fear
that destruction of North Ameri
