NEW YORK. July 20. -(-Al
though shares chugged uphill a
little la moderate trading on the
New Tork stock exchange today,
they did not recover Friday's de
cline In foil.
By some it was thought the
purchase of equities had been in
spired by the more than seasonal
production of automobiles for the
week ended today. Cram's esti
mated output at 83,255 units
compared with 83,450 in the pre
ceding week and 65,829 in the
corresponding week a year ago.
Increased output of small clg
arettes was seen in some broker
age houses as a trade weather
ane. The bureau of internal rev
enue reported June production at
12.119,688.167, an upturn of 74,
625,344 over the total for that
month last "year.
In terms of the Associated
Press average of 60 stocks, the
market moved ahead .1 of a
point to 45.6. Trading was a lit
tle less active than Friday at
429,500 shares.
Although a number of special
ty preferred stocks picked up 1
to 2 or more points, most of the
market's industrial pace - setters
contented themselves with gains

were American Tobacco "B" at

CHICAGO, July 20.-()-Sug
gestions that black rust is now
threatening 50 per cent damage
to spring wheat in the Dakotas
and Minnesota gave wheat values
notable strength today.
Black rust advices from the
northwest were the most alarm
ing yet this season, but scarcity
of sellers rather than unusual in
crease of speculative demand
characterized the Chicago wheat
market. Grain authorities said a
race is on between maturity of
the spring wheat crop and devas
tation from rust, with the rust
so prevalent that It can be seen
in the field for a distance of 10
rods.
Wheat closed firm at about the
days top level, 1-1 cents a
bushel higher than yesterday's
finish, September 85-, corn
c -nged to up, September

up, and provisions unchanged
to 5 cents down.
Closing quotations:
Wheat: July 85, September

OFFER OF ST016E

PORTLAND, July 2 0. - -There
remained a quiet tone in
the local butter trade without
any too much activity suggested
over the coast generally. Batter
fat however was firmly priced.
With cold storage eggs being
offered by speculators who are
taking foil advantage of the law
which allows their sale along
with newly laid eggs, there was
a badly mixed tone and quality
in the trade.
Demand for live poultry re
mained firm but there continned
a lack of price change practically
through the list. Some demand
was showing for turkeys but this
was by no means keen.
Weaker tone was showing for
local potatoes despite the higher
values forced at Yakima and ef
forts of local distributors to ob
tain more money for the latter.
Local stock was better than out
side stuff too.
There was a general scramble
for remaining stocks of apricots
with The Dalles chiefly sought
because of its far superior qual
ity as a rule. Offerings were far
below actual advance orders.
