ART DEMENT S
PROGRESS MARKED
Students' Work in Regular
Demand; Recognition is
Gained in Contests
Little is heard but much la seen
of the work of one department at
Salem high school the art d
part m en t, headed the past two
years by Ida M. Andrews. Posters
and I signs made by the commer
cial art students are in constant
demand from school officials and
organizations; sketches, water
colors and design pieces by the
boys and girls in the graphic arts
classes attract wide interest, ;
As Mrs. Andrews closes her ser
vice at the senior high school
where she has served In the ab
sence of Ruth Marie Brauti, who
has ibeen studying in Europe
she finds it gratifying to compare
the early and advanced work of
her. students, to note the progress
they have made, and recall that
this year one of her students won
third place and two others, honor
able mention, in an international
poster contest.
A poster with the motif, "be hu
mane", by Theron Kent placed
third in an international contest
sponsored by the Latham Foun
dation of Palo Alto, Calif., while
posters by Machiko Usuui and
Doris Astlll received honorable
mention. In local contests Miss
Usuui took first in the poppy and
music week poster competitions.
110 Average Enrollment
Enrollment in the art depart
ment has averaged 110 students,
about equally divided between
graphic and commercial arts, Mrs.
Andrews says. In the former sec
tlon, pupils try their hand at
charcoal, pen and ink drawing
and sketching, in water colors and
crayon. Their final problem this
semester has been to produce in
water colors three figures in ac
tion typifying some nationality.
The outstanding work they have
done probably will be exhibited
at the 1935 Btate fair, as was done
last year.
Commercial art- students study
all types of lettering and design
that may be of use to them in bus
iness.
With the return of Miss Brauti
next fall, Mrs. Andrews will re
turn to her former position as di
rector of art at Leslie Junior high
