MS OF ALFALFA
A check on the types of alfalfa
which Droduea hest in Marion
county has Just been completed
by K. W. Sawyer, working
through the office of County
Agent Harry L. Riches. Nine dif
ferent types of alfalfa have been
planted at various places in the
county; the planting was complet
ed yesterday.
Previous experiments show that
the Idaho and Montana Russian
Grimm alfalfa produce best in this
region, but to more fully check
rormer results, patches of all
types have been planted. These
species are (1) eastern Oregon
common, (2) California common.
(3) Cossack, (4) Willamette
Grimm, (5) Lodak, (6) Idaho
Grimm, (7) Arizona common, (8)
Montana common, (9) Chilean.
Sawyer said that this ia truly an
experiment to see what results
will be throughout the county on
the test. Planting has occurred at
O. W. Humphreys' in Waldo Hills,
at C. J. Rice's near Woodburn, at
Dick Gilmour's at Talbot, at Lloyd
Keene's of Shaw and C. A. Hoov
er's near Gervais. Only typical av
erage growing conditions will pre
vail.
The check will extend throneh
soils. Four different tvnes of oil
Polk clay loam. Amity silty clay
loam, Chehalis soil, and Willam
ette loam, are being used. Lime at
the rate of two tons ner acre ia
also used as a sweetner. In order
to check more accurately, the dif
ferent types of alfalfa are grown
side by side, 18 inches apart, in
rows.
Farmers are urged to make nr.
ca8lonal visits to these places to
observe growth of the plants.

DAY IVOt EVENTFUL
1 STOCK MARKET
NEW YORK. Mav 20-UPk-Snb-
stantlal rains in a few bieh-nriced
industrials and some specialties
touched up an otherwise rather
oloriess stock market picture to
day.
Stock exchanee business droo
ped to only about halt that of
the last previous full session, with
a turnover of 971,670 shares. Tak
ing the list as a whole, gains about
balanced losses.
Communication shares were an
exception. A considerable follow
ing developed in this division at
advancing prices. Radio prefer
red "B" and Weatern Union were
leaders, and American Telephone,
wnicn suirered from late profit
taking, was up more than a noint
at times. International Tele
phone was active at fractionally
improved levels.
On the Cornorate Glidden Un ¬
reporting for the 6 months to
April 30, and Edison Electric of
Boston for the 12 month period
to the same date each showed an
upward trend hi profits.
The Associated Press averse?
for 60 stocks ended the dav un
changed at 41.8, but some active
issues snowing advances of 1 to
2 points included Allied Chemical
at 149 American Can at 125 s .
Shell Union at 32, Seaboard Oil
at 34, Eastman at 153 and Schen-
ley at 27. Others closing about
steady included U. S. Steel at
34, American Tobacco "B" at
86, Chrysler at 47A. Interna
tional Harvester at 41 and
Sears at 38.

ton. Gardeners and
Ranchers1 Mart
PORTLAND, Ore., May lO.-iP)
-Heavier supplies of new produce
spurred activity at today's session
of the gardeners' and ranchers'
market. .
The first Oregon strawberries
and the first "peas finally appear
ed in saleable quantities and cre
ated quite a stir of activity.
Although California berries
were down to a range of 1.65
to $1.75, two shipments of ber
ries from Tlgard and Canby held
their own at a steady figure of
J2.50 per crate of 24 pints. The
Oregon terries were of good
Quality and all berries moved
briskly.
A truckload ot peas from The
Dalles moved reasonably well at
six cents a pound, but California
peas took the play at four to five
cents.
Lettuce from Oregon and
Washington was of various quali
ties and the quotations were un
steady. The old potato market remain
ed dull.
