Scrambled Bearcats Lose
to Pilots in Close Game
The most mixed-up Willamette
baseball team that ever trod a
diamond took its first defeat in
11 games from the Portland uni
versity Pilots yesterday by a 3-
to-2- score. "v. v-i---With
.Vinnie Harriman, John
Oravec and Don . amis, all badly
smitten by the rays of Old Sol,
cut of the game the "Bearcats
looked, after "Spec" Keene had
shifted them around to meet the
situation, as if they had been
shaken np in a hat and dumped
onl the diamond. - Dick Weisger
ber was behind the plate instead
of in ' left field. Ken Manning,
regular first : baseman, was at
third and . Bill -: Beard, regular
third Backer, played short. Don
Burch, vr ho hasn't, played first
since his high school days, was
on the first bag. Bill Sutton play
ed his first full game of the seas
on at' second. Dwlght Aden, cen
ter fielder, was the only player
who was at his regular position
throughout the game.-
Lawrence Nunnenkamp, fresh
man hurler. pitched his first
game of the .season and did it
well. . Although he issued six
passes in six and a third innings
be held : the Pilots to four scat
tered hits and mixed a bewilder
ing "downer? with a roundhouse
curve to strike out five batters.
Despite their scrambled condi
tion the Bearcats came close to
beating . the Pilots. None of the
runs was earned. The last play
of the game almost tied it up,
and was a difficult one to judge.
Beard singled with . one down,
stole second and got to third
when Burch was out at first. He
then attempted to steal home and
the Pilot catcher, dropped the
ball. Ed Tweed had two strikes
on him when the play was made
and after tbe catcher failed to
tag Beard, Umpire Spec Burke
yelled "Strike, strike, strike."
The catcher again dropped the
ball as Tweed started running for
first but retrieved it in time to
throw him out. Considerable ar
gument developed, the umpire
stating that Coach "Gene" Mur
phy said the run did not score
and "Spec" Keene offering to
put up 325 that it did. "Spec"
lost the argument.
Portland scored the first in
ning when Anderson singled and
scored on an error. In the second
Willamette went ahead when
Beard was safe on, a scratch sin
gle, moved to third on Burch's
sharp drive to center field and
Beard score on a passed ball with
Burch scoring on a squeeze play.
In the second inning the Pilots
