Somewhere around 500 carloads have gone out In recent weeks and the move ment is expected to continue for a fortnight with 350 to 400 cars moving in the next ten days. The slow spring in the east has retard ed spring pasture and made feed ing necessary. Local prices con tinue low, from $7 to Sll a ton depending on the kind and qual ity. If farmers let go at these prices the supplies in the valley will be pretty well reduced. The backward spring east of the mountains has had the oppo site effect on seed shipments. It held back planting and now it Is too late for seeding hay. As consequence there win he some carry-over of red clover in this territory. The rye grass stocks were well reduced, much of this going into the southeastern states last fall Acreage of rye grass planting in the valley is only about 60 per cent of last season, the. dry fall preventing the usual seeding. Gard 8 I eners ana Ranch crs Mart PORTLAND, Ore., April 19.-Xff)-Activity at today's early ses sion of the Gardeners' and Ranch era' market did a rapid about face and was unusually kigh, es pecially In the earlier part of the period. However, prices were generally unchanged, and showed only a slight gain. Prices on apples varied more than they hare for several weeks. Supplies were' exceptionally good, and buyers were numerous and ac tive in spite of the rising quota tion. Fine quality Winesaps went to a high of 11.75 and $1.80, Newtowns rose to $1.70 and $1.75, while the face and fill made a larger advance to $1.25 and $1.40. Excellent supplies of spinach were moving well but at a lower Quotation. The qualities offered were good,- and the demand rela tively high 'as the prices concen trated In a lower range of 60 and 70 cents per crate. Potatoes again held the lime light with a fair increase In price Supplies were relatively small. and the good qualities were sold out before the end of the session. xne quotation advanced to a spread of $1.85 and $1.95 for hun dred pound sacks. - Plentiful quantities of rhubarb were showing little activity -with the price dropping a trifle. De mand, although reasonably good. could not support the large sup ply, and even the best qualities of rhubarb were selling in range of 45 and 50 cents per 15- pound box. Celery supplies have been small for a number of sessions, and quo tations show little change.' To day's session saw a greater con centration at the lower end of the previous range of $3 to $3.75 Qualities were none too good, and the demand was fairly light with the general quotations in spread of $3.26 to $3.50 per crate. : 8piaacb Orange box, 60-70e. .
