Tuesday meeting was largely at
tended and an enthusiastic meet-
nr held. A communication was
read from Grand Chief Barbara
Grares of Portland, congratulat
ing the Home Temple No. 21 upon
its renewed interest in temple af
fairs and on its interesting plans
for future meetings. j
All the temples of this district
will attend the convention at Dal
las, the second Saturday in May.
Grand Chief Barbara Grares will
bo present at this convention. The
district includes Salem, Silverton,
Dallas, Independence, Lebanon,
Scio, Corvallis and Eugene.
The organization of an Altru
istic club was reported. The club
was formed recently at the home
of Miss Rose Specht and will meet
the Becotiff and fourth Thursday
afternoons. It Is open to all
Pythian sisters and no nines are
collected. The club members will
work for the benefit of; the tem
pie, particularly stressing chil
dren's work.
The invitational card party, for
the benefit of the temple, was an
nounced for March 26. The
Knights have Invited the Sisters
to be their guests and help with
the entertainment of visiting
Knights and their wives March
28. Guests will be from Salem,
Independence, Hubbard, Aurora
and Dallas. A committee to in
troduce the visitors, is composed
of Minnie Fishwood, Elizabeth
Cooley, and Nada Grinde.
Following the regular business
of the Temple a - program and
supper was given. In charge of
the program was the membership
contest division headed -by Elsie
Nelson. Mrs. Carl Specht' acted
as chairman of the program. Num
bers included a recitation by Lee
urmde, vocal selections by Mrs.
Harry Riches; reading and dance
numbers by Darrel Kolas with
Marvel Grinde at the piano; pi
ano solos by Marvel Grinde. In
cnarge of tne decorations were
Lillian Heald, Nettie Cusiter,
Elizabeth Gottenberg and Attie
Lee.

played in the senior class play to
be presented Friday night. "Grow
ing Pains''; the three act comedy
by Auranla Rouverol, is the play
selected. Guy DeLay Is director.

eral service for Mrs. Sarah E
Given was held Wednesday after
noon in Salem at the Rlgdon Mor
tuary, with Rev. W. C. Kantner
officiating. Interment was made
In City View cemetery. Pallbear
ers were H. R. Peets,- Carl Wil
liams, W. J. Denham, BUI Rams
don. Mr. Micklehany. and Jack
Balles.
Mrs. Given was born In the
Waldo Hills, the daughter of Ab
raham and Rebekah Jacobs,
March 30, 1861. She was mar
ried to John Given In 1880, who
was deceased in 1128." The fam
ily moved to Salem in 1907. Mrs.
Given made her home the past
two years with her son Pearl and
wife at Turner. After a lingering
Illness she passed away March 18,
1935.
Seven children survive: George
Given, of Washington; Pearl,
Turner; Edwards, Silverton; Roy,
California ; Harry, Salem; Gentry
and Mrs. Bessie Dahled of , Port
land; slaters, Mrs. Jane Breeding
Eugene,' and Mrs.' Sophie ,Toung,
Idaho; onev brother, John Jacobs;

SUNNYSIDE, March 21. Farm
activities are stirring with the
tractor salesmen out to sell new
equipment to the farmer. Many
tractors will be used in this dis
trict.
The surveyors are out again
cutting through the good farms
which would change the geogra
phy of the district. This Is caus
ing much adverse criticism.
Many new families have come
into the neighborhood but no
houses are available and they
have had to look elsewhere. Some
have stayed and purchased farms.
Sunnyside Booster club held its
postponedfmeeting Tuesday morn
ing when These new officers were
elected: President, Frank Renner;
vice-president, Lyle Brown; secre
tary, Vannie Van Meter, The new
president appointed these com

the main banking room, of the
former bank. This will give the

The SERA landscape gardening
course to be given at the Clear
Lake schoolhouse will -' have Its
first meeting Tuesday evening at
7:30 n. m. March 26. Tho ronrsn
of twelve lectures is free to all
adults whether residents of Clear
Lake community-or not.
,- Plant propagation, care of
shrubs tod trees, and many other
subjects of especial interest to ru
ral people, will be taught. The
course will be conducted by Earl
Llttwiller. All Interested are

ert smith, truck - driver for the
Elkan dairy fell asleep while
driving on the -Pacific highway
just north of Hardcastle avenue,
Monday night about 12 o'clock,
and received cuts about the face
and head, when his truck went
into' the ditch, and he found him
self covered with empty: milk bot
tles. He was able to drive his
route Tuesday but the truck was
