If you had a plane that could travel 200 miles an hoar, and could navigate the immensities of space. It would take you 150,660,- 000 years to reach the nearest star, if you never stopped for gas, oil or a sandwich. O You see, it happens to be 263,- 856,320,000,000 miles to Alpha Centauri, our nearest stellar neighbor, although that figure is only an approximation. The sun and the planets are much closer to us, you will realize. O To phrase that distance differ ently: Alpha Centauri is four and one half light-years away from us, a light-year being the distance light trarels in one year. Light travels about 186,000 miles a second, in case you want to check the above figures. o The North Star is about 40 light-years away, and It's pretty close, considering the fact that many stars you see are hundred and thousands ol light-years from us. o Now how big do you feel? While reneral Quotations on chickens hare not been lifted, ad vanced prices were being offer ed and paid in spots even by mem bers jt the Portland exchange which dictates the published price of buyers here. There continued a good call for turkeys up to 20 cents pound both for local consumption and for freezing. Local call was for both hens and toms while outside de mand was chiefly for the toms. New Florida potatoes were out distancing the Hawaiian supply here Insofar as sales are concern ed. Quality of the domestic stock was reported much the -best. Fraternis Hears Plea, Encourage Public Officials Taking the problem of carinz for the poor as an example of the arduous duties of government officials, Don Upjohn, Salem newspaper man, urged that en couragement be given them rather than only criticism, In addressing members of Fraternis club at the Gray Belle restaurant last night. Upjohn declared that If the nnnr could a g r e e among themselves they could effectively say: "We're poor and you're rich; we're going to take your riches." "Our government stands at the crossroads? tt jrould be a big help if an 4fga-aflon like this (Fra ternis) would give a little encour agement to your government offi cials in the duties they have to perform," Upjohn concluded.
