I S SHOW IS HRKET IDEAL Manufacturers of Foodstuffs Take Part This Weekend in Special Event It Is to be called a "Food Car nival,' this Friday and Saturday offering of the products of more than 20 manufacturers at special prices at Busick's Market grocery. Behind the event, however, is an anniversary and a story the sixth birthday of the Busick Mar ket, store and the success of an Idea of mass display and customer . self-service which the Busick Mar ket bag perfected eince It began its operation February 9, 1928, in th new Market building on North Commercial and Marlon streets. i It is now six years in retro spect It seems only a few weeks since William Busick inaugurated ' an Idea which had been buzzing In his mind a long time. That Idea was to operate in Salem a grocery store where large quanti ties of groceries carload lots, if you wjll could be placed on dis play before customers, made easilyfaceessible to the purchaser who would largely do his or her own c&ooiing, would pay cash and delivefe fiis own purchases. Emil Buchman conducts a standard, union barber shop, which he has operated for the past five and one-half years. Claud Mix handles watch and jewelry repair in a space he leas ed a year ago. The Coffee Shop , which serves noon lunches with soft drinks and sandwiches, available throughout the day, is operated by Mrs. Imlah Taylor. The shop Is owned jointly by William Busick and the Valley Motor company.. FREE PROGRAM IT 2. STII Columbia Broadcast Enter tainers Booked With Hollywood Band A number of entertainment fea tures are to be offered free to the public as a feature of the "Food Carnival" at the Market this weekend. Headliners will be Viola Blaney and Ken Quinney, representatives of the Columbia Broadcasting company. They will put on their musical numbers at 11 a.'m., 3 p. m. and 5 p. m. Friday, and from 1 to 6 p. m. on Saturday. In addition the Hollywood Cow boy band directed by "William Brazeau will be featured through out Saturday. A number of attractive mer chandise prizes have been secur ed by the Market for free distri bution to customers throughout Saturday. Manufacturers of food products bandied by the Market are participating in providing these awards. DRUG STORE ALSO his Ma This weekend brings the sixth anniversary of the Market Drug store, a Salem retail institution whose birthday and success paral lela that of the Market grocery founded by William Busick. The drug store, opened by C. L.. Well man and continuously operated by htm, has been an integral, part of the Market development. Occupy ing IS 00 square feet of floor space in the new' building, the store has offered a complete drug serv ice to its patrons.. . In addition to selling bottled drugs and toiletries, Mr. Wellman, a registered pharmacist conducts a prescription, service. His store is attractively arranged with ample fixtures and displays. Tha Market Drug store this weekend Is participating in the Market carnival with its own special offerings of seasonable goods at special prices. John son, at Springfield early Monday morning. E. L. Johnson, past 81, and a pioneer of the Springfield region. Part of the town site was formerly the donation land be longing to the family. Johnson spent three years at the home of his son at Gates about two years ago. He had been seriously 111 ior several weeks. - i MANY PLOWING NOW OAK POINT, Feb. 15. Farm ers are out with tractors and teams, plowing for spring seeding. The open winter has made the fall crops make an unusually fine growth. Some farmers have sow ed clover in the fall planting of wheat, and if there is an usual amount of moisture this summer, this clover will make a good crop for next year.
