quiet. Quotations were generally
steady to Arm. Spot foreign wools
were Inactive but steady as for

their forward, movement today
and trading on most exchanges.
especially those handling securi
ties and currency transactions,
was very active.
By declining against foreign
moneys the dollar as&omed a
more normal direction, though it
still maintained substantial pre
miums over French francs and
sterling. The American unit was
down abruptly at the opening.
then rallied for a time, bnt finally
dropped again, French francs,
closing 6.33 cents, were up one
tenth cent and, the pound at
4.93 was 6tt cents higher.
Stocks overcame early profit
taking and climbed to a strong
finish which saw general gains of
1 to 3 points. Bonds, In the sec
ond busiest Saturday on record,
held their momentum, although
much of the betterment was in

Cotton reached new highs since
July and wheat gained around a
cent. Silver futures brightened a
cent or more.
"Shares looked best in the indus
trial group where merchandising
rail equipment, steels and motors
enjoyed good sponsorship. The
advance was accompanied by the
familiar lag in ticker reports on
floor transactions as sales swell
ed to 32,081,170 shares, the big
gest two-hour volume since last
summer. The bond ticker, bur
dened with a turnover of approx
imately 117,000,000 par value,
closed about three quarters of an

- WHEAT IS BROADER
CHICAGO, Feb. !.-(;p)-Broad-ened
general baying led to 1 5-S
cents advance in the wheat mar
ket today simultaneously with a
brisk aptarn of securities.
Baying et wheat was baaed
largely on reports that crop de
terioration from drought eenth
west and west had become acuta,
and that belief in cold ware dam
age to soft wheat appeared to he
widening. Word that the grata ex
change code would soon be ap
proved at Washington was like
wise construed as bullish, and so
too were advices that exports of
United States wheat would soon
be stimulated through gotern
ment action.
Wheat closed unsettled, 7-t to
1 1-4 above yesterday's finish,
corn 1-4 to 1-2 up. oats 1-S to 1-3
advanced, and provisions un
changed to a rise of 10 cents.
Today's closing quotations :
Wheat -May 92 1-4 to 3-8:
July 91 1-8 to 1-4; September 2.
Corn May 52 1-2 to 5-S; July
54 3-8 to 1-2; September 56 1-4.
Oats May 38 1-8 to 1-4; July
37 1-2; September 37 1-4.
PRICE 1 CUBES UP
OICNTGEHLY
PORTLAND, Feb. S.-HVPi-The
price on cube butter was ad
vanced lc all along during the
weekend session of the exchange
with butterfat buying prices up
a similar sum.
Even though there was an ad
vance quoted for standard eggs
on the produce exchange for the
weekend session, no changes oc
curred on the general market.
The co-ops were still naming for
mer values and the general trade
was making no changes.
There was an extreme shortage
of young chickens and both
springs and broilers were higher
for the better sorts in the local
trade. An advance was again be
ing named on Pekin dncks.
Without price change, the call
for dressed turkeys Continued of
more or less nominal volume
here. Supply was small but ap
peared sufficient to take care of'
needs at current values.
Famine of country killed calves
was continued here. A most acute
shortage was reported by the en
tire trade with prices up frac
tionally in spots. Hogs were
steady with lambs firm. Beet
was steady.
More than normal strength wa
suggested in the market for wool
here but trading was of scant vol
ume, due to the lack of offerings.
More activity was suggested at all
western points during the coming
week.
Added strength was suggested
in the cheese trade but without
additional price rise. The price n
northwest stuff was coming closer
to that quoted by Tillamook for
months although the latter con
tinned the highest in the world
for like type.
