Near World Peak; Potatoes
From Florida Arrive;
Calves Increase
PORTLAND, Feb. l.-()-But-ter
prices were being maintained
generally here despite the fact
that Portland was today one of
the highest markets In the world.
Local make was not as heavy but
out-state receipts were heavier.
There was no change in the
general egg market situation for
the day. Price shading was con
tinued as it has been for some
time past but the chief cutting
was by outsiders.
All lines of chickens were show
ing good call along the whole
sale way and at practically the
same values that have been rul
ing for several weeks past. Dress
ed turkeys were steady.
Sales ot country killed calves
were a trifle stronger and higher.
Sales were now up to 9c pound
with an extreme shortage ot of
ferings. Other lines were un
changed. There was some slight better
ment in demand for potatoes at
the source. Prices were being held
at Yakima.
Onion growers were still hold
ing their onions although they
are now anxious to sell at $1.75
net but only a few odd cars were
reported selling. The price was
considered too high for the east
and the orient.
First new potatoes ot the sea
son were reported from Florida,
priced 10c pound or ? 4.25 for 50s.
The offerings were of the Bliss
Triumph variety.
Market was full of spinach with
little change in price on good
stuff.

PORTLAND, Ore., Feb. 1.-JP)-An

ed salary increases of 26 per cent
for platform men and about 15
per cent for other employes of
the Portland Electric Power com
pany and the Portland Traction
company.
Harry M. Kenin, chairman ot
the board, and W. E. Kimsey, rep
resenting the workers, contended
that the workers are entitled to
a living regardless of the earn
ings ot the companies. James F.
Clarkson dissented, holding the
ability ot the companies to pay
living wages should be the deter
mining factor.

11G BILLOWED
BY STOCKS, eOiS
NEW TORKj Feb. l.-iWith
the currency formally tied to a
modified gold -bullion standard.
Wall Street today gave free ex
pression to optimism.
Stocks and bonds billowed up
in very active trading, though
commodities hesitated. Heavy
placement ot fund in securities,
originating both here and abroad,
was Interesting for contract it of
fered to the comparative sluggish
ness of staples which during in
flationary urges of last summer
had done the leading. The coun
try's debut an its new form of
gold basis obviously caused many
investors, as well as speculators,
to feel uncertainties incident to
an unanchored monetary unit
were being allayed.
On the stock exchange, indus
trial shares, on the basis of the'
Standard Statistics average, broke
through summer highs for the
first time in the present "bull
market" It was noted that large
amounts of stock were marketed
on the rally; however, offerings
were absorbed with little difficul
ty and the industrials' ascent to
the highest ground since Septem
ber, 1931, sent Wall Street home
in good spirits.
Sales totaled 4,716,370 shares.

BOSTON, Feb. l.-ip)-(U. S.
Dept. Agr.)-The market wa
mostly rery slow on greasy comb
