CURTIS, Recently series of tests was conducted at the University of Oregon which though not delv . iag directly Into the matter of athletic ability, is of Interest to sports, fans who like to delve Into the whys and wherefore. .The tests had to do with rifle shooting, which is a form of sport but hardly of athletics. And sad to relate, the results do not show that the i "dub" has any great chance of becom ing an outstanding expert through faithful and strenuous practice. In the matter of rifle shooting, for instance, the final conclusion was that four-fifths of the excel lence may be credited to heredity and only one-fifth to practice. Thj tests were in postural sway, arm tremor, steadiness In thrusting a stylus point Into a small hole, arm steadiness and sway of the rifle in. shooting position. Men already known to he ex pert riflemen in the R. O. T. C. ranked highest by a big margin in these tests; athletes were second, bnt a poor second; draftsmen and pianists ranked next. Not one in CO of the non riflemen tested, equaled the average of the riflemen. Ah, but perhaps the riflemen had acquired this steadiness by practice. So a group of them were given intensive practice in the tests for a period ten times as long as the standard needed to produce Improvement. They did improve, but so little that it was concluded practice accounted for only one-fifth of the difference between steadiness of a good and a poor rifle shot. They are keeping on with the experiments, the object now be ing to aiscorer whether It Is possible to select men who have inherent shooting ability, by giving the tests. to a group wholly untrained in marksman ship. The steadier ones will be put Into one group and those less steady In another, then both groups given the same training in marksmanship. When that is finished, marks manship scores will be com pared. Due to the weather man'n mn. tinued practice of reserving his best rain for Sundav. th Indnn. trial golf league matches sched uled to end last Sunday are con tinued for another week and the final big day is postponed until reDruary 4. Teams scheduled to play this week are State Office. Industrial. Packers, statesman Gasoline, Engineers, Bankers. Printers. We're not supposed to know anything about art, music and motion pictures, but still, we rather think you'll enjoy "Din-' ner at Eight." Generally when you collect too many stars they strut too much, but this con stellation gets right down to business and portrays life In extremely lifelike fashion.
