Brltton Ross of the First Baptist church here is having great success with a revival campaign which he is Just concluding at the Rcio Bap tist church. One night this week SO extra seats were crowded Into the church and then many had to ' be turned away. Wednesday night - he had-eight conversions, reports a Salem resident who attended. Hendricks, editor emeritus of The Statesman, is to make a short talk, recounting Incidents from the early days of the paper, at the newspapermen's banquet tonight at Eugene. Mrs. Hendricks will accompany him on the trip and the two will visit relatives in the Lane county city. ..A number of other newspapermen from Salem plan to attend the conference which began last night and con tinues until Saturday noon. The Eugene chamber of commerce is host at tonight's banquet, an an nual affair. Bakery Answers An answer to a damage suit recently filed against the Salem Bakery com pany and others here last week, was filed Thursday in circuit court by the bakery. It asserts that George W. Rice, plaintiff. was negligent and that he did not exercise ordinary caution. The suit involves an auto accident last August 4n which Rice, a pedes trian. was allegely severely In jured by a bakery wagon on Court street. Program at Roberts The Sa lem Gideons will give a program at the Roberts church, south of town on the river road, tonight, starting at 7:30 o'clock. Musical numbers, pictures and other feat ures will make up the entertain ment, which is open to all with out charge. Has Relatives Here B. L. Hagemann of Portland, who was this week appointed to the post- mastership there, was a brother of the late Charles F. Hagemann of Salem. The latter was for years auditor with the public service commission. Jones is Speaker Prof. W. C. Jones, professor in economics at Willamette university, will ad dress the Salem Ad club at its weekly luncheon meeting today noon at the Gray Belle. His topic has not been announced. Trucks Not Exempted CWA workers or men employed by the federal government and driving their own trucks are not exempt from paying the fees and licenses for such trucks, an opinion by the attorney general held Thursday. The only ones exempt from pay ing the licenses under the bus and truck bill are those driTing ve hicles owned and operated by the federal government, state or other political subdivisions. Rice has filed suit for $15,402 dam ages in circuit court here against Ball Bros., claiming defendants were liable for damages he receiv ed in a collision here August 17, 1933, at State and Commercial streets. Rice, riding a motorcycle, alleges he was struck by a truck owned by defendants. He rays the defendants were negligent. Train Cecil Manning, employe of Salem Sani tary Service company, escaped in Jury but his automobile was bad ly damaged early yesterday when the car collided with a Southern Pacific switch en gin- at the 12th street crossing near the Oregon Packing company plant. The body of the car was demolished. The chassis and motor were not seri ously damaged. To Give Dance The Veterans of Foreign Wars here will give a benefit dance Friday night at the Nelson building, Chemeketa at Liberty street Glenn Hoar's "Footwarmers" will provide the music. Galloway, chairman of the state tax commission. Gallo way pins his faith on the rebates for advance payments set by the 1933 legislature. These rebates will run from 1 to 3 per cent of the total year's tax payment. If payers elect to return only the first, quartet, which will be due in March, there will be no penalty. It they choose to pay for the first two quarters, a 1 per cent rebate on the entire amount paid will be allowed.
