friends were entertained at the

Eugene on Thursday night, Jan
uary 25, by the Associated Stu
dents of the Unirenity of Oregon.

will be his only concert In the
state outside or Portland, so a
number of Salem folk will prob
ably attend.

10 is labeled "Red Letter Day"
by the federated clubs and a
benefit affair ia giren on that
day. There are 170 federated
clubs in Oregon alone. The pro
ject has been in progress since
1108 and a. revolving fund ot
140,000 has been created. Some
1022 girls hare been helped
through Oregon colleges by this
schoianhip loan fund and Salem
women- hare always done, their
part in contributing to the fund.

Prantls are Given
Surprise for 25th
Year of Marriage
GERVAIS, Jan. 8 Mr. and
Mrs. Frank Prantl were the in
spiration lor a surprise nartr sir
en at the parish hall Sunday night
on the occasion of their 25th wed
ding annlreraary. The affair was
punned by their sisters and broth-
en. The time was spent playing
cards and dancing and later re
freshments were serred.
Mr. and Mrs. Prantl lire on the
home place two miles southeast of
town where Mr. Prantl was born.
Mrs. Prantl before her marriage
was Miss Theresa Ditrick. They
hare six children, all at home.
They are Cecelia, Agnes, Ellis,
Freda, Maggie and Carl. About
100 friends and relatives were'
present, some coming from Port
land, Tualatin, Woodburn and
Marquam

Smith, 25, and Allen Phillips, 21,

ly Injured late in November, in an
automobile: accident on the West
Side Pacific highway, two miles
north of Monmouth, are both well
on the way to recovery. They hare
been at the Dallas hospital since
the night ot the wreck; where
Smith's face Is enclosed in a cast
to augment restoration of his up
per Jaw, which was fractured in
sereral places. Phillips, who sus
tained a fractured left leg. near
the hip, has bad to lie with his -leg
elevated, and will not be able
to Ieare the hospital for sereral
more weeks. Smith expects to re-
turn to his home at Monmouth
this week, but will be obliged to
wear the cast for at least two
more weeks.
Smith's car, a light roadster, .
was demolished when he collided
with an Oregon State college stu- .
dent, H. Van Valln, who was re
turning to Corrallis after the
Thanksgiving holiday. Van Valin
assumed blame for the wreck, as
his lights would not tarn on In the
fog. His sedan bunt Into flames
and was incinerated. He gave first
aid to the Monmouth men, help
ing Charles Bowmsn of Monmouth
to transport them to the hospital.

home of Mr. and Mrs. G. D. Scott.
Mn. Jessie Pendleton who has
been rlsiting at the home ot tier
sister, Mrs. Verny Scott, has re
turned to her school at Under
wood, Washington. She is the
principal of the grade school
there.

SCIO, Jan. 8 Mr. and Mn.
Early Phillips and Mrs. Phillips'
mother, attended the funeral in
Portland Thursday of Mn. Mary
Privett, 75, sister of the senior
Mrs. Phillips.. Mrs. Prrcett was a
resident of the Jordan area near
Scio for a number of yean but
moved to Portland a long time
age. The only other surviving :
member of the family is the lis
ter residing in Scio.
