Egg Trading Better; Supplies
Of Lamb Limited; Marts
Closed on Monday
PORTLAND, Dec 30. (P)
Surplus of butter was appearing
here, following the late shortage
of churning and receipts. Specu
lative interests in storage stock,
however, were- holding values to
the extreme point over the holi
day. Trading In the egg market was
of much better character locally
with sufficient fresh stock now
arriving to take care of practical
ly , all the needs of the trade.
Prices were about steady at the
week end.
There continued complaint
against existing grades of eggs in
Oregon with much similar dissat
isfaction reported from Washing
ton and California. Ott the part of
producers the claim was made
that the cost of grading has reach
ed such proportions that the
country was getting very little for
its supplies.
Limited supplies of country
killed lambs were reaching the
local trade with resulting strength
in the price, although no further
advance has been forced. Other
meats except poor beef, were in
active call.
Monday was a general holiday
in the local trade and all markets
will be closed for the day. This
included local fruits and' produce
as well as grains and livestock
Potatoes and onions were dull
at late prices.
Lettuce sold steady at 65c to $1
crate for northtwest.
Onions grown on the Lablsh
beaverdam in Marion county are
finding their way to oriental mart
kets In Increasing quantities, with
an apparent firmly established
market there. During the last30
days of the year, the onion mar
ket climbed from 90 cents to
11.35 a hundred, which means an
excellent boost for the growers,
who are getting $1.35 net on ex
ports. Of the approximately H80 cars
of onions grown in Oregon the
past season, about 70C cars were
produced at Labish. Onions aver
aged around 300 to 32S sacks per
acre.
Ninth Rank for
Small Fruit is
Accorded County
Marion county is really a great
county when it comes to all small
fruits and Oregon ranks pretty
high, as shown by the U. S. cen
sus of 1929, comparing crops of
all small fruits in 50 counties in
the United States. w
In fact, -of the 50 counties
ranking highest, six are from the
state of Oregon, with y Marion
ranking ninth in the U. S.
Clackamas county ranked 22d.
Washington county 23d, Multno
mah county 25th in the United
States and Linn, county, 30th.
Hood River county comes under
the wire ranking 47th in the
United States for all small fruits.

BODSTERTO WHEfiT
CHICAGO. Dee. 30. JR
Stirred by a predicted new cold
wave threatening damage to
wheat, and by decided strength ,
of gold stocks la New York, grainy
prices rose briskly today.
Belief that soma- stimulating
fresh monetary announcement
would originate tn Washington
j-over the holidays tended also to
inspire grain buying. Fairly ag
gressive purchases of wheat
hosted that cereal a maximum
of 2e, but some reaction fol
lowed, based on belief tha rise
had been too rapid.
With evidence of 4 broader
eastern demand, however, tha
market remained strong, aad
wheat closed firm, l4-2c above
yesterday's finish, corn -lfte
up, oats -lc advanced.
Today's closing quotations:
Wheat Dec., 82 s May, 44

Corn Dec., 44; May, 50
