Three Industrial Deaths There were three fatalities due to Industrial accidents in Ore gon during the week ending De cember 28, according to a re port prepared Friuay by the state industrial accident commis sion. Reviewing the solon's work on the four major problems, liquor control, unemployment t e 1 1 e f, truck legislation and . school re lief. Kiddle presented1 some fig ures on the sales tax of Inter est to Marion county. The sales tax, expected to be bitterly con tested with referendum In view, will bring 24.000,000 tor school relief, will be in effect two years, and will reduce the coun ty and district tax levies four per cent, as a- general average over the state. If the tax is car ried after a vote at the May primaries, It will go into effect May 22. Under the tax. which will re duce the county property levy in sum collected, each school will get $400 per teacher. MAR POLK 1 T Nearly All City Oiiices Will be Voted on in '34 Turn of the year brings to pub lie attention the fact that virtu ally all city officials will either be up for replacement or reelec tion. Included in the Mst will be the mayor, the city treasurer and the city recorder. Seven of the 14 aldermen must stand or fail at the next election. County politics will see less dis turbance. Only the office of coun ty judge and of one county com missioner will be up for filling in 1934. Presumably both Judge John Siegmund and Commissioner James E. Smith, whose terms expire,-will be candidates for reelection. GROWERS ID MEET A joint meeting of nut grow ers of Marion and Polk counties will bo held in the chamber of commerce here Saturday, January 6, with the all-day gathering to begin at 9:30 o'clock. C. E. Schuster, horticulturist, and Dr. Paul Miller, both of Ore gon State college extension ser vice, and J. R. Beet of Dallas, county agent; will be the main speakers. Schuster will talk on soil mois ture, cultivation, cover crops, pruning and thining out of trees, while Miller will dwell on walnut and filbert blight and Im part new developments in com bat of these. Samuel Arnold Randle, remem bered by many Oregonians as prominent Willamette valley edu cator from 1874 to 190Z ana s lem's first city school superin tendent, died at his home, 2829 Southwest Upper Drive, Portland, i December 28, 193S. Born November 29, 1839, at Alton, 111., he was reared on a farm near Shipman, 111.; he taught rural school at an early age and was studying for the ministry at the outbreak of the CiTil war but enlisted on Lin coln's call for volunteers in 1862 in the 122nd Illinois Infantry. Serving through the war, he af terward taagbt school and at tended Asbury (now De Pauw) university at Greencastle, Ind. Mr. Randle married Ellen Tag gart of Shipman, 111., August 26, 1874, and together they came to Salem that same fall. Between in tervals of teaching he attended Willamette university, graduating with the class of 1881 and later receiving his A.M. degree from the same Institution. Tlnrine his teacMng years he was best known as principal of La Creole academy at Dallas, 1880-1685; principal of Santiam academy at Lebanon, 1892-1902; and as first city school superin tendent in Salem. 1885-1889. After some years in eastern Washington he returned to Port land in 1917, where he lived the remainder of his life. He was a lifelong member of the Methodist Episcopal church and was a mem ber of Lincoln-Garfield post of the G.A.R. His wife died fh Sa lem in May, 1891. Surviving him are two sons. Dr. Henry C. Ra die of Port land and George H. Randle of Lebanon; five daughters, Mrs. L. B. Jonet of Salem and the Misses Faye, Mtr.:aret, Agnes and Hat tie Randle of Portland; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Services will be conducted by Rev. Wilbert Dowson, pastor of the First Methodist church of Portland, where he was a mem ber, at 10:30 a. m., December 30, at the Peninsula Funeral home, 3018 North Lombard street, Portland. The receipts, large for this time of year, mark the last tax turn over for 1933. County officials said yesterday that December pay- been Quite good, a Session Records Signed by Snell And Fred Kiddle The senate and house Journals of the recent special legislative session were" signed Friday by Fred E. Kiddle, president of the senate, and Earl Snell, speaker of the house, preparatory to be ing filed with the secretary of state. It required approximately 20 days for the desk clerks of the two houses to complete the jour nals. Snell left for Portland Friday night while Kiddle will remain in Salem until the return of Gov ernor Meier from California. ,Budget items of four utility companies operating in Oregon were rejected by Charles M. Thomas, public utilities commis sioner, in orders Issued Friday. The items consisted mostly o f payments to holding companies and reduction of salaries of chief officials. The commissioner rejected pay ment of $121,000 to the Byllesby Engineering and Management cor poration by the California and Or egon Power company, operating In Southern Oregon, and reduced the salaries of C. M. Brewer, pres ident and manager, from $7,875 to 36.300 annually and of J. C. Bovle from $5,525 to $5,000. He nlRA ritaartroved of donations t o golf and other clubs, holding it was the duty of stockholders to make this payment rather than charge it to rate payers. The commissioner did approve of the proposed expenditure o f $482,340 for equipment during the year 1934 by the company. Other companies affected in cluded the Blountain States Power company, operating in southwest ern Oregon and in the Willamette valley. The commissioner again recommended the salary of C. M. Brewer, president and manager of the firm be cut from $7,875 to $5,300 and that of Z. E. Merrill, vice president, from $6,375 to $5, 400. Payment of $52,180 to the Byllesby firm. Approval was giv en to proposed expenditure dur ing 1934 of $354,392. Knlaripq were reduced In his recommendations for chief offici als of the Idaho Power company, operating at Vale, and payment of $46,500 to the Electric Bond and Share company, as well as num erous donations. The fourth ord er affected the West Coast Tele phone company, operating at La Grande and in southwestern Ore gon, reducing salaries of officials and payment of $4,600 to the Loveland Engineering company of San Francisco. do '.
