The contest was held as a test
of ability of individual players. In

and December 19. It was arranged

The schedule for 25 players
used by Mrs. Quinn was used in
the national championship last
- year. One player sits oat during
each round, since it was impos
sible to devise a plan whereby 25
players would constantly bid and
play. The novelty of the move
ment, according to Mrs. Quinn, ap
pealed to the players and proved
to many the value of a good part
nership game.

SEATTLE, Dec. 21. (JP) Pa
rt fic northwest carloadings of 63,
317 cars during November were
the best for November since 1930,
Secretary R. E. Clark of the Pa
cific northwest advisory board for
"the American Railway, association
reported today. In November last
year, they were 54,974 and in
Novi. 1931, 60,288.
Vivacious Alice White, screen star, and Sidney Bartlett, screen writer,
whose marriage in Magdalena, Sonora, Mex., climaxed the longest
engagement in Hollywood history. Their engagement was first an
nounced by the actress in 1929. It was subsequently broken and repaired
more than once.
GETS IRON JOB
LIBERTY, Dec. 21. Howard
Olden, who has spent some time
here visiting with his parents, Mr.
and Mrs. W. Olden, has received
employment with the Klamath
Falls iron works and left for that
city.
HONOR STUDENT TOLD
SCIO, Dec. 21. Report cards
for the second six weeks were dis
tributed in the high school Wed
nesday. Honor cards were award
ed to Melvin Holt, entire high
school,, Maxine Arnold, senior;
Melvin Holt, junior; Arlene Dar
by, sophomore; Thelma Sprague,
freshman.
SCHOOL MEET CALLED
BETHEL, Dec. 21. A special
school meeting for Bethel district
has been called for Wednesday,
December 27, at 8 o'clock. O. L
Brubaker, chairman of the board,
will preside.

will present its Christmas,, pro
gram Sunday night at 7:30
o'clock. It is to be a combined
program given Jointly by the Inn
day school and by the church
choir. The orchestra, directed by
J. O. MInton, will open the pro
gram with a group of old favor
He Christmas carols. Following
this there will be a short pro
gram of music and exercises given
by the elementary departments of
the Sunday school and arranged
by Miss Louise Pinnell.
The closing number will be the
cantata, "King All Glorious" by
Roy E. Nolte, presented by the
50 roice choir of the church. John
S. Friesen is director of the choir
and Mrs. A. J. Smith is accom
panist. The soloists are: soprano.

"The Night Before Christmas"
will be put on by the young peo
ple on Christmas ere at the Brooks
community church. O. O. Epley is
directing and the cast includes
Leo Reed, Gladys Epley, DorotAy
McKnight, Alrin Reed, Ada Hut
to, Jack Bosch, Donald Waller,
Charles Hntto. John Hutto, Albert
Harris, Alfred Lorraine and Eliza
beth Clark.
Additional program numbers
will be singing of carols, read
ing by Ramona McKnight, songs
by a quartet composed of Maxine
and Dorothy McKnight and Ada
and John Hutto, yocal solo by Mr.
Quigley. A four - piece orchestra
consisting of Alfred Lorraine, Mr.
Hnnt, Albert Harris and Berna
dine Wheeler, will assist.
The usual treat will be given
the Sunday school members at the
Sunday morning service, says Rev.
G. H. Quigley, pastor.

cided, the Salem Chess club call
ed off Its regular Monday night
meetings until January 1. Then
a number of the lovers of the
royal game will again, assemble.

devised, and one that nas come
down from ancient civilizations.

the "castles"; galloping across
the board with the "knights" on
prancing steeds; outwitting the
amorous and treacherous "queen"

the throne; holding a position
with the aid of the mitred
"bishops";, driving little by little
but ever forward the pawns,
the cannon fodder of chess. Into
no-man's land: Is it any wonder
that chess which so Intrigued the
minds of the ancients snoum live
on and captivate the imagination
of men and women in . almost
every country of the world to
day?
Amon the Salem chess play
ers, it is discovered that there
are on its membership rolls, sur
geons, dentists, clergymen, law
yers, a newspaper columnist, en
trineers. real estate dealers, in
surance men, university profes
sor, college president, superinten
dent of a fish hatchery, a fox
farmer, musician, clerks, dairyman.
The club was organized at the
close of a chess party held four
years ago in the home of Rev.
George H. Swift. The 12 men
present constituted the charter
membership ot the club. There
are now SO men enrolled, with
an average attendance of -between
35 and 40, with men coming from
Mehama, Stayton, Lyons and ML
AngeL The president this year is
LeRoy Ledgerwood, superinten
dent of the fish hatchery at Me
hama. The handicap system of tour
nament play In use in the Salem
club Is patterned after that ot
Portland and other Pacific coast
clubs.
Any lover of chess Is cordially
invited to join the club, as the
handicap system used soon auto
matically shows his ability, and
he may choose his opponents
from his own class if he chooses.
James E, Renner
Dies in Portland;
Lived in Hubbard
HUBBARD, Dec. 21. Notice
has been received of the death of
James B. Renner, aged 77, late of
Portland, father of Mrs. Mary
Black, James L. and Robert E.
Renner of Portland; also surviv
ed by four grandchildren. The
funeral was held Wednesday, De
cember 20 at the Portland crema
torium. Mr. Renner was well - known
in Hubbard as he formerly lived
on the Will Rider place at Elliott
prairie. After he sold that place
he bought the Poinsett place west
of town, later selling that before
moving to Hubbard. Mr. and Mrs.
Renner were members of the Con
gregational church in Hubbard.
Men on Deck for
Work but No Boss

LIBERTY, Dec. 21. A number
of men found themselves in a
rather umiei'il situation when
they report re for road work

The men had been notified to
begin work Monday morning on
a CWA road improvement pro
ject. Someo'ne had forgotten to no
tify W. W. Westenhouse who is to
be foreman on the job. After mat
ters were straightened out tne
crew went to work at 1 o'clock
digging a ditch on each side of
the road going westward from the
store.
Ten men, mostly ex-service
men, worked Monday. More are to
go on Tuesday.

Sale of gasoline in Oregon
have been increasing steadily
sine midsummer according to a
comparative statement ot sale
and receipts released this week
by, the secretary of state's office.
Total gains in gallons of gasoline
sold In the last five months
amounts to 3,834,481, despite a
one-cent Increase in the state tax
and a half-cent boost in federal

As a result of the increase of
the last five months the losses
m sales the forepart of the year
have been wiped out and the
state now records 92,000 more
gallons of gasoline sold the first
11 months of 1933 than in the
corresponing period of 1932. Rev
enues to the state trom the gaa
tax have been rapidly swelled,
the net Increase being $881,852.

mark of 90 in a subject, she is
exempt from further examinations
