BUTTER MAKE STILL
OVER mn, SI
All but Fresh Churning is
Extremely Weak; Good
Chicken Demand Felt
PORTLAND, Nor. 13. UP) The
butter market trend continued ot
most nominal character locally
and along the coast generally.
Huge storage stocks and the
lateness of the season combined to
force extreme weakness In other
than fresh churning which was In
more than seasonable offering.
Local market was still above nor
mal. "
Onen market trices continued
fractionally below , established
quotations on the exchange inso
far as fresh stock was concerned
-and storage goods had no estab
lished price at the moment.
Butterfat. continued steady.
Trading in the egg market was
rather slow. While there was no
weakness as "yet la strictly fresh
goods,' much' stuff was being sold
of that grade which was somewhat
lower priced.
Demand for chickens was now
good In the lire poultry trade but
without price changes. Receipts
continued limited which was per
haps the chief feature in the mar
ket.
Fractional advance amounting
to about 5c cental In resales was
shown in the potato trade here as
a result of the tighter holding at
Pacific northwest primary points.
The movement was greatly re
stricted. Onion growers were holding
tighter at Willamette valley points
with littles offered even at 75c a
sack. Most growers were now ask
ing at least 80c but buyers have
not as yet freely offered the 75c.
Beef continued the only excep
tion to general strength all
through the market for country
killed meats. Veal, hogs and lambs
were alike In better call with even
sows, showing a greater demand.
Celery was gaining with prices
firm.
Apple trading was steady with
a congestion of undergrade offer
ings. Dalles lettuce was holding
steady up to II with local in fair
call up to 64c crate.

Willamette university had vir

all its first' semester, 1933, tees,
this weekend. Less. than a dozen
students were reported as unpaid
by Business Manager N. S. Sav

matriculation fees were fully paid.
For a number ot years the univer

WEST STAYTON, Nov
13
Final check on the season's pro
duction for the West Stayton
Pecking company cooperative has
just been made and released, and
shows that 292 tons, IS 17 ponnds
of Blue Lake beans of first, sec
ond and third grades were packed
this year from 60 li acres. This is
an average of nearly five tons per
acre.
Several cases of the number one
quality were packed crosswise in
cans with glass tops and sent to
the world's exposition at Chicago.
Unfavorable weather cut the to
mato crop short this year but oTer
137 tons were accepted by the
cannery. There was 65 acres
planted to tomatoes by the organ
ization this year.
To Vse Trellis Xert Tear
It is reported by officers of the
Co-dperative that next year will
see a few changes. The bean acre
age will be doubled, bringing that
figure to 120 acres. . The tomsto
acreage will stay the same bnt all
growers will be required to trellis
their plants. Some of them did so
this year and it proved to be a
better way for this locality, giv
ing a better quality and much
more productive.
Cleary and Hillman, West Sa
lem, packers, have a five year con
tract with the Co-opefatlve and
are to pack all vegetables and
some berries. It is reported that
their equipment, for handling the
beans, mustbe doubled for next
year as it as worked to full ca
pacity this year.
The growers are all quite en
thused over their success for the
first year and are looking forward
to a better and more prosperous
year in 1934.
