M)-r-Roy Martindale, head of the Portland produce exchange, announced to day that the dairy marketing cor poration, a government organiza tion, waa to begin buying butter on the local market for govern ment account today. Purchases for the time being will be made only, of fresh churn ings. All that, is offered will -be bought od the basis of the Chicago market, around 23 cents a pound for extras. The government will not buy storage stock at this time, hoping to relieve the general sur plus by taking considerable fresh butter off the market. Prices here have "been holding steady recently in anticipation of the government's buying opera tions. V PORTLAND, Not. 8.! (Nom inal prices continued to be quoted for butter. This applies not only to the Portland market but to practically all Pacific coast cen ters. Egg Tone Steady Market on eggs continued to reflect a steady tone for fresh stock here despite a sharp loss in Southern California. Storage goods continued to show weakness everywhere. With turkeys so cheap . they were taking the bulk of the fowl demand, chicken prices were be ing maintained by limited offer ings . recently. There was a small call for live ducks and geese. The first general cleanup of late offerings of country killed calves was announced.. Sales were being made at full prices for top block ers. Country killed lambs were do ing better in the local trade with top stuff easily moving at 9c lb. Hogs were also steady with 7c the general top here. Lettuce Trade Firmer Both cauliflower and lettuce showed a firmer tone for the day for both local sales and for ship ment. Car loadings were purchas ed up to 40c crate for Is of cauli flower with celery at 1 1-1.10 crate. With digging operations near- ing completion in all sections and with the bulk of the supply roll ing into storage, market oa pota toes continued to gain strength but at practically no further change In price.
