BUTTER ON PRODUCE 1CIHES IIP Chicken Trade Firmer; Hogs Weaker; Onion Prices Are 1 Unseized Late batter Quotations oa the p r od nee exchange at Portland Tuesday were up one-half to on cent, according to the Associated Press ta"bie.. Prices quoted were: extras 22 c e n t s, standards 21 cents, prime firsts 20 cents and firsts 19 cents. PORTLAND, Oct. 24. VP) Batter continued unchanged here today with extras at 21c, al though comment was beard that the market waa wholly artifi cial. Agitation for government purchase of hotter left the trade somewhat bewildered, it was said, inasmuch aa many 'appear unwilling to offer their supplies to the federal .government at cur rent values- because they would be subjected to a rather heavy loss. Trade in chickens was slight ly firmer and especially so for medium heas, which were high er. Some of the operators were reported as having paid more than the exchange price basis for other fowls. General steadiness was con tinued in the market for top quality fresh eggs with prices maintained. Storage stock was moving in greater volume to the east but at low prices. 1 Distributors report Just a fair demand for turkeys with a gen eral top selling price here of 22 23c for young toms and hens. Off grade stuff as low as 15c pound. With further recent shading of livestock values, country ' killed hogs were down again along the wholesale way with tops gener ally no higher than 7c pound. Rather heavy offerings of country killed lambs were show ing with 9-10c pound- the gen eral top for supplies and offer ings not moving out as well as might be wished for. Teal was holding fteady to firm. Prices were' unsettled in the onion trade aa a result of almost record low values at Yakima for quick movement. Local onion growers continued unwilling to do business. Some local walnuts ;frere ex pected last of the week. In the meantime Callfornianwere slow here. FI6HT IS GSIB PORTLAND, Oct. 24. (Jf) Fight among wholesalers estab lished in the market caused much confusion in the potato trade to day on the East Side Farmers' wholesale market. The fight was carried to such an extreme that wholesalers were selling Takima and Deschutes Gems with a net loss of as much as 15 cents cental. Such tactics thoroughly demoral ised the entire potato trade and local growers were nnable to do business in volume at prices that were satisfactory. The action of wholesalers was such as to prove a most serious menace to the fu ture of the market and called forth demand from home produc ers to eliminate the warring fac tions. Not only was there a slashing of potato prices, but the price on onions waa cut to the quick and by the same interests. Yakima stock was being sold as low as 60 cents cental. Apple demand showed further small gain in activity, but prices appear abouut unchanged. Best Kings and Northern Spys as well as Jonathans were as high as 75 cents box. One to Six Point Gains Made Late On StockMarket NEW YORK. Oct. 24. (JPi Active buying in the last hour carried stocks up 1-6 points or more today after earlier hesi tancy. Foreign "gold country" bonds, especially those of France, had a boom, while United States fed eral issues eased. The French franc, notwithstanding the cabi net upset, made an extreme rise of around one-quarter cent and sterling rallied more than 16 cents. The. dollars gold value, as measured by the franc yardstick, slipped'to the vicinity of 67 cents; its low, reached several weeks ago. Is 4SH' cents.
