Mr. DeGuIre pointed out that during the seven-year period end ing with 1929, Northern Pacific operating revenues averaged 197, 982,850. Of this average income in that period, the company was obliged to as 72.05 per cent for psymentof operating expenses and to set aside S per cent for payment of state and local taxes. These taxes had grown until they exceeded $8,000,000 In 1929, and during-that era of prosperity, be said, communities along the Northern Pacific system became aecaatomed to receiving this amount from that railway com pany each year.
