SILVERTON, Aug. 24 The
Silyerton Smith-Hughes depart
ment received 14 samples of corn,
wheat, oats and barley this week
from the federal grain inspection
division of U. S. D. A. of Portland.
The samples will be used in the
laboratory work of the depart
ment. They contain test .speci
mens of poor, damaged, highly
damaged and exceptionally good
grain. This will acquaint the
boys with the various types of
grain and how grain' should look
when it is in good condition.
The local Smith-Hughes depart
ment will cooperate with H. A
Lindgren in the wheat control
work in this section. Warren E
Crabtree, instructor of the local
Smith-Hughes department has
been spending the past two and a
half days preparing a mailing list
of the wheat farmers of the com
munity. He has been contacting
leading farmers, bankers and im
plement dealers In securing this

wedding of Interest to many in
Weat Salem and Salem was sol
emnised in Sacramento recently,
when illss Jane Crossett ot Oak
land became the bride ot Clif
ford Flake of Oakland, formerly
ot West Salem. The Key. Barre
Gifford" Lee, arch-deacon of the
Episcopal chnrch of Sacramento
officiated, and he too was pastor
of a Salem charge 20 years ago.
Mr. Flake is a grandson of Mrs.
Sara Satton and lired with her
for some time, attended the Sa
lem schools and worked in the
legislature a number ot years. He
and his bride are planning a trip
here in the near future. He now
list and reported Wednesday af
ternoon that he had collected 420
names. In" securing the names,
Mr. Crabtree covered 137 miles.

Bobby of Eugene arrived Wednes
day to spend a fortnight with her
sisters and family, the Earl W.

Eleven members of the West
Salem boy scout , troop hiked to
their camp site on upper Glenn
Creek road Sunday, constructed
a fine portable bridge and made
plans for the building and signal
tower they will later erect on the
premises.
Contest Gains Interest
The popularity contest for el
ection of the regatta queen Is be
coming more interesting for West
Salemites with the nomination of
Ruth Maers and Margaurite Fil
singer from here. Miss Maerz, a
tall slender brunette Is a sopho
more in the Salem high school and
a talented vocalist, and Miss FI1
slnger, a graceful blonde, gradu
ated in June from the high school.
Half a dozen girls from other
places are competing and the
names and rank ot each will be
given soon.

WALDO HILLS, Aug. 24. The
first accident of the threshing
season happened Tuesday at the
Brunner ranch. Alvis Brunner was
driving the water wagon through
the home pasture, when two loose
horses running beside , the .work
team frightened them out of con
trol. Young Brunner, Jumped,
the fall dazing him for some time.
The runaways headed for a fence,
but before reaching it the coup
ling broke, leaving the back
wheels. The tank was carried an
other 60 feet.

the Dave M. John home. While
living at Los Angeles :Mrs. John
taught at the same school' with
one of her guests. The women,
have been making a trip through:
Montana and Utah and on to Alas
ka by boat. The California folk,
