CHICAGO. Aug. 24 (AP)
Grains turned sharply downward
late today, led by wheat with a
tumble of more than three cents

There was nothing to account
for the late selling wave except
the market was thin and easily

Wheat closed weak at approxi

Rank and File of
Shares Vary as
Grains Decline
NEW YORK, Aug. 24. (AP)
Stocks had difficulty making
much headway against reaction-'
ary grain markets today. Some
shares vers stronr throughout.
but the rank and file, after a fore
noon spurt, settled down to mod
erate swings up and down, end
ing the day, however, with a frac
tional average advance.
Allied Chemical was particular
ly vigorous, though Its extreme
rise of 7 points was somewhat
reduced. American Can, up more
than 2, enjoyed a fairly active
market. Consolidated Gas, North
American, Westlnghouse, Ameri
can Tobacco "B," U. S. Steel, Rey
nolds Tobacco "B," Eastman and
Liggett & Myers "B" improved
major fractions to 'better than a

EUf PRUNE SHIES :
MADE AT S14 TO SIS
Confined to Salem, Amity,
Roseburg; Season Late
For Italian Prunes
Pre-season sales of prunes, lim
ited so far largely to Roseburg,
Salem and Amity, carry prices of
from $14 to $15 per ton as a top
for fresh prunes, according to the
best information. Considerable
stock has been purchased at a
lower figure, from $11 to $12 per
ton, and in some cases, contracts
proride for dockage on scab and
netting, while others specify ac
ceptance ot straight orchard run.
Production in this immediate
area is extremely light, while the
harvest will apparently be heavier
in southern Oregon In proportion
to the distance south of Albany.
Quality promises some difficulty
due to widely scattered scab and
russettlng in practically all the
districts. Thus far. Insect and
brown-rot infestation is very light,
and now the only real fear of
growers is rain after the first of
the month.
"The northwest dried prune crop
will probably be about the same
as a year ago, according to the
Market News Service, with from
36 to 40 millions of pounds of
marketable dried prunes antici
pated. It is estimtaed Oregon will
produce 20,000 tons for fresh use
and 22,000 tons for drying. Wash
ington will produce about the
same for fresh use, and 3000 tons
for drying.
Italian prunes in western Ore
gon and Washington did not start
to turn color until the middle of
this taonth, which means that har
vesting will not start until around
September 20 to 25.
