Woods renewed his recommendation that an asy lum be built. The contract with Drs. Hawthorne & Loryea was re newed in 1888 for two years, and again In 1870 for four years. In 1874 the governor, L. T. Grover, was authorized to contract with Dr. J. C. Hawthorne for the care of the insane for $5.50 a week for the term of four years. In 1878, Governor W. W. Thayer was au thorized to renew the contract for six years, at $5 a week. This act, passed October 18, provided that the husband or par ents or estate of the person com mitted bo charged with the ex pense of conveyance to the asy lum. . e "a e October 25, 1880, an act was passed making the governor, sec retary of state and state treasur er a board of commissioners of the asylum for the Insane, and appropriating $25,000 from the general fund and levying a spe cial tax of one mill for the erec tion of buildings. October 23. 1883, the asylum was opened with the admission of 320 patients. It Is now known as the Oregon state hospital, Sa lem. The Eastern Oregon state stocks which lost from fractions to 2 or mora points. Among the Industrials, declines of similar scope were recorded by American Tobacco B, United Carbide, United Aircraft, Sears Roebuck, Woolworth,, United Fruit, U. S.
